Unit 3, lesson 1 - POSITION AND MOTION

Standard Focus:
(PS-E-B3 #25) Observe and analyze motion and position of objects over time.

I can statements:
 Describe and relate position and motion.
 Define speed using distance and time.

Vocabulary Words:
position, motion, speed, distance

Materials List: chart paper, markers, recording sheet for each group, rulers, yard
sticks, stop watch, masking tape, windup toys, bag of toys moving in different
forms

Activities:
Engagement: TW introduce vocabulary words/definitions from chart, SW watch
brainpop, jr.com video on position and motion. Stop to elaborate vocabulary.
TW stop video at 1:48 minutes.

Explanation: TW divide the students into 4 groups. Each group will have a
recording sheet, directions, and objects to perform their task.

Exploration: Students will perform specific task as directed.

Group 1: Position
Given a list of items, students are to describe its location
using position words (over, under, left, right, on top of, beneath, next to,
etc.) and record it on their sheet. If time permits, they can think of their
own to describe it to their group members.

Group 2: Distance
Given a bucket of items to measure using a ruler, the students
will record the measurement using the inches, and then cm. side. They
will measure the distance of rolling objects.
Group 3: Motion
Set up a basket of small toys. Have the students
decide the types of motion for each toy: ex. Round and round, straight
line, up and down, back and forth etc. Record answers.

Group 4: Speed
Set up a racetrack as shown on p. 112 of textbook. Place a wind-up toy
at the starting line and let it go. Have a partner use a stopwatch to time
the toy’s trip. Measure how far the toy travels. Record measurements.

Elaboration: A spokesperson from each table will sum up their group activity.
Exit Ticket: Each group will answer a question in conclusion to their activity.

Evaluation: SW make a 4-section foldable where they will label each group’s
activity (position, distance, motion, speed) draw a picture, and write one
sentence about their discovery. Paste into Science journals.

Teaching Strategies:
Table Talk, Fist to Five, Cooperative Learning Groups, Think/Pair/Share
