Calculating averages and average atomic masses pg 1

Calculate the average age in months of 5 students given the following:

Student # 1 2 3 4 5 Total = 5
Age in 192 180 175 18 165 Avg. age =
months . 8

Convert each of the values from months into years. Show work using factor label conversion method for minimum of 2 (Round to
the correct # of sig figs.)

Using the following information to calculate the weighted average age of 1600 students. Show work in detail. Use blank line in
table if desired making sure you label information. See pg 81 in book for help/example. (note answer is NOT 16.2 yr)
# of 511 422 179 249 239 Total = 1600

Using the following information to calculate the average age the students. Show work in detail. Use blank line if desired. Hint treat
% same as # of students.

Predict the most abundant age among a group 250 students ages 15, 16, 17 if the weighted average age was 16.7.

Predict the most abundant age among a group of 78 people ages 35, 38, 40 if the weighted average is 36.1? (note no one in the group
is age 36, 37, or 39)

Predict the most abundant age among a group of 78 people ages ranging from 35- 40 if the weighted average is 36.1?
Using common sense
In question #1 a student calculated the average age to be 900 months. Explain why this impossible and what most likely did they do
incorrect.

In question #2 a student calculated the age in year of student #2 to be 2160. Explain why this impossible and what most likely did
they do incorrect.

Atoms are very small as a result masses of atoms expressed in grams are very small. For example mass of an oxygen atom is
2.656x10-23g. In most chemistry calculations involving small numbers of atoms grams are not practical so atomic mass units are used.
Atomic mass unit (amu) -
A very small unit of mass used to measure the mass of atoms, molecules and ions.
Defined as 1/12 the mass of the isotope carbon -12 (12C) mass# = 12
Thus carbon -12 has a mass of 12amu. (Note carbon-12 has 6P+and 6N0 in its nucleus)
The mass of 1P+ is about 1amu
The mass of 1 N0is about 1amu
The mass of 1 e- is so much smaller it is said to have zero amu in comparison.
Isotope-
-atoms of the same element that have different masses because do differing numbers of neutrons.
-examples see pg 79 table 3
-Nuclide is a general term for a specific isotope of an element
Average atomic mass-
-the weighted average of the masses of all the naturally occurring isotopes of an element.
-weighted means taking into account the percent abundance of each isotope. The higher the % the closer the avg. will be to it.
-the mass listed on the periodic table
-examples see pg 82 table
-What you will be calculating later on this pg.
