COOPERATIVE PLACEMENT

DESCRIPTION
This module enables a student to undertake a two-month period of industry / organization / work-
based placement in order to gain practical experience in a working environment and demonstrate the
acquisition of sufficient learning skills relevant to work-based activities.

This module requires the development of enhanced transferable skills and lifelong learning skills
including planning, negotiating, implementing, demonstrating and reflecting. The development of
these skills will be used to evaluate the student’s performance during the placement period.

The students’ learning experience will involve full and active participation as a placement student in
the organization taking part in the Co-operative Placement. Additionally the module will have
material delivered through self-directed-study using suitable material. Students may use the Internet to
access additional materials to supplement and update materials supplied by the Placement Team. A
logbook will be used to keep track of open learning, feedback and the assessment of critical
analyses/papers practicing the skills development for this module

Each student will be assigned a visiting tutor-supervisor (from UCSI) who will be concerned
primarily with ensuring the effective meeting of course management or organizational issues during
the co-operative placement period.

AIMS
The principal aims of this Co-operative Placement are:
 To allow students to relate their academic knowledge to the work environment,
 To provide a range of practical experience to underpin the final stage of their studies,
 To improve significantly their employment prospects on completion of their chosen degree.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this Co-operative Placement, students will be able to:
 Draft, negotiate and agree objectives for the work placement period.
 Maintain an appropriate and professional dialogue with their placement organisation.
 Maintain an effective, reflective logbook of performance in order to work effectively with the
placement organization and their visiting tutor.
 Appreciate professional and legislative constraints and responsibilities.
 Apply a range of transferable skills.

CODE OF CONDUCT THROUGHOUT THE TENURE AT THE HOST ORGANIZATION


Please:
 Be professional when seeking information in your host organization, appreciate sensitivity of
information seek, and keep information entrusted to you confidential.
 Note down your observations, and maintain a logbook of tasks performed.
 Do not introduce any software into your host organization’s computer systems without prior
agreement of work supervisor.

Also note that:


 Should you encounter any irregular problems or concerns (e.g. inability to report for duty for a
prolonged period of time, harassment at work, etc.) do get in touch with your the Co-op
supervisor soonest possible.
 Do also communicate regularly with your Co-op supervisor via e-mail to report on work progress.
 You are required to complete the required number of hours as designated for Co-operative
Placement.

Reminder: The University Examination Board of UCSI regards any form of cheating as a most
serious matter and may entail severe consequences. The Board shall not hesitate to impose appropriate
penalties commensurating with the offence committed, up to and including expulsion from the UCSI.

THE HOST ORGANIZATION SUPERVISOR’S ASSESSMENT

You should request your supervisor (whom you are reporting to in the organization) in the host
organization to assess your performance at the appropriate dates to meet the deadlines scheduled in
your briefing. Remember to seek your supervisor a few days before your deadlines. Do allow your
supervisor ample and sufficient time to complete the evaluation form (make allowances that your
supervisor may be busy or simply not available to assess your performance). Ensure the employee
evaluation form is submitted to the CECS / Coop Office on time and remember to keep a
backup / photostatted copy for yourself. If you are doing Coop 1 & 2 or Coop 2 & 3 please
ensure to submit employee evaluation form 1 week before each coop term. Students, who did
two Co-Op, should submit 2 DIFFERENT assignments and also 2 DIFFERENT Student
Evaluation Forms. Both assignment and Student Evaluation should be stated clearly the term of
particular Co-Op (i.e. year 1, year 2, or year 3).

PROCESS AND PROCEDURES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF COOPERATIVE


PLACEMENT REPORT

Students are required to submit their report in these 2 formats:

1. Hardcopy: a copy of the report must to be made available to Faculty Administrator also
know as (Faculty CA) at said submission date.
2. Ensure to download the cover page standard for all programme and bind together with
your assignment. Assignment that has no cover page which is filled with complete details
that is required in the cover page will be panelized.
3. LATE SUBMISSIONS MORE THAN 3 DAYS WILL NOT BE ENTERTAINED
AND REGARDED AS “0”.Please refer to the penalty table 1.0 as shown below:

TASKS: COOPERATIVE PLACEMENT REPORT

The report must be word-processed, and produced to a professional standard, and it MUST contain the
following:
 A cover page
 Table of contents
 List of figures and tables (if applicable)

Create a portfolio that encompasses the following 2 sections which consists of 800 – 1000 words:

SECTION 1: Understanding Your Host Organization

 Examine the background or history of the host organization and/or describe the nature and
function of the department/team you are in, in context of the host organization. (10 marks)
5 marks for the background of the company and 5 marks for the functions of the department /
team.
 Discuss THREE (3) products/services provided by the host organization and/or the
department/team you are in (whichever applicable). List products/services. (6 marks)
2 marks for each product / service. (max = 6 marks)
 Analyze the customers of the host organization and/or the department/team you are in (whichever
applicable). List AT LEAST TWO (2) different types of customers. (4 marks)
2 marks for each type of customer. (max = 4 marks)

SECTION 2: Understanding Your Tasks and Your Worth

Explain the significance of the tasks that you perform in your host organization, covering the
following points:

 The role that you play and the tasks that you perform in your organization / department/team. List
AT LEAST TWO (2) tasks being assigned. (6 marks)
1 mark for each task and 2 marks for each explanation on the task (max = 6 marks)
 Explain how you contribute to the organization/department/team. List AT LEAST TWO (2)
contributions. (6 marks)
3 marks for each contribution (max = 6 marks)
 Explain the significance of your contributions to your host organization / department/team. List
AT LEAST TWO (2) significant. (6 marks)
3 marks for each significant. (max = 6 marks)
 Describe if you have been provided with training or were given adequate chances to learn.

 Explain what you may have learned of the latest technologies and developments from the field.
