Channapatna Toy Factory in the tiny city of Channapatna some 60 km south-west of

Bangalore (Bengaluru), is a major attraction after being revived by KHDC (Karnataka
Handicraft Development Corporation) from nearly a decade of struggle. Just an hour’s
drive from Bangalore brings you to this wonderland of toys and toy factories, famous for
their two centuries-old lacquered wooden toys. Channapatna is located in the
Ramanagaram District of Karnataka. As one explores the city, one can see the advanced
small scale and traditional way of manufacturing units where over 6000 workers are
engaged in the business. The craftsmen make the toys using traditional methods, and
use vegetable dyes rendering them eco friendly and child safe. These fantastic colored
miniatures are protected under the World Trade Organization as GI products (traditional products or produce belonging to a
particular community for generations).
 
Many homes and families still pursue this grand craft, displaying them in lines of bright attractive pieces alongside the roads.
Many items are eye catching especially for kids; however napkin holders and other utilitarian items are now being exported
from here. Many new items other than the toys have been introduced like cricket bats and wickets, photo frames, trophy
bases, spectacle holders among other things.
