BASIC EFFECTS
Usualiy an editor uses a cut to make the transition from one
,ill

shot to another. However, many times the editor employs an


cjfoct, such as a dissolve, to make the transition from one shot
to another. In this chapter we'll define these common effects
and look at the creative ways filmmakers use them. Sorne of
the effects are routine, sorne are inventive, sorne underscore
the emotional intensity of a scene, and ali must pass the test
of serving the movie and advancing the story.
We'll start by repeating the cut shown at the begin­
ning of Chapter 1. This way, you can clearly appreciate the
difference between using a cut to make a transition and
using an effect.
