to run Avalon’s sanitation over the last few years, and the unique and in
some ways simple concept of saltwater flushing has proven both vitally
important and very reliable. Virtually the entire city of Avalon uses
saltwater for its sanitation, including areas as far inland as the country
club. While almost everyone has switched to modern 5-liter toilets, no one
sees saltwater flushing going away. The system works, and there are no
alternatives on the table. Given Avalon’s limited growth chances – the city
is surrounded by Catalina Island Conservancy land and the Santa Catalina
Island Co.’s property – saltwater flushing in its current format is likely to
be around for a long time. When you go ashore rather than using the head
on your boat, be aware you’re part of a unique and very effective public
works system that makes Catalina Island much more enjoyable.

The Sunset Series Returns

MdR's Most Popular Race is Back for Another Season

I
t’s April folks and that means one thing for Marina del Rey racers—California Yacht Club’s Sunset Series is back for another season. Clear your
schedule every Wednesday from now until September and be part of this preeminent race that has been around, seemingly, forever.

If you’re reading this before the start of the first race on April 17th, get your act together—procrastination time is over. Call the crew, fix up the
boat, get out and practice. If you’ve never done the series, get involved.

This race works on many levels. Some folks spend money, train hard and make it their life’s mission to win this thing. It can be competitive - there’s
enough like-minded racers to satisfy that Jones, but there is another faction that just likes having an excuse to get out on the boat with friends and sail
around the course. Both coexist with ease. On any given Wednesday you could find a white-knuckled skipper pulling his hair out over a blown spin set
not far from a dude who just dropped the corkscrew and chose retrieving that over trimming the jib (they’re probably in separate classes, but maybe
not!)

There is truly nothing like seeing the main channel of Marina del Rey filled with well over 100 boats—colorful spinnakers trying desperately to
catch what little wind the afternoon has left behind. As the sun kisses the horizon we hear the repetitive, sometimes rhythmic sound of air horn
blasts signifying finishing racers. Folks watch this magical vision from the serene setting of Burton Chace Park or through the windows of waterside
restaurants, happy to be there watching something so impressive.

Suit up folks—make it happen. You have races to win, friends to see and painting/photographs to inspire!
