Urbanization is the increase over time in population or extent of cities and

towns.c

Greater the population/density greater are the problems to accommodate

them at ƛ dwellings, working space and other common/essential amenities.

There comes the need to either develop cities vertically or horizontally;

varying on the context of the place.

If we look at the development of cities, we can deduce that the trend was to
develop horizontally, but over times due to increase in population and
decrease in the available land, has left us with no other option than to go for
a high-rise development

Scarcity of land and need for more dwellings, workings space etc. came up
due to the inflow of people towards th e core of the city/urban area

Due to more land value and population, there is an obvious increase in
density, leaving no other option than to go for vertical development.

High-rise development, increases the density and hence less coverage on
land. This respects the high land values in urban areas, and leaves the
prospect of having open land for, social and environmental concerns.

With a large density at small land coverage, common amenities can be
efficiently/centrally located.

As the high-rise development pattern is well planned as per the city, master
plan, services could be easily located and efficiently placed within the
building. Moreover the services could serve a greater amount of people with
comparatively less expenditure than in sprawls.

Density of the high-rise development pattern gives more security, due to the
common activity, as well as the centralized administrative system.

There is a common factor for people to opt for apartments in developing

countries, as they feel apartments more secure than individual houses.

Urban development would never have been possible the way it is now,
without the help of high -rise buildings. Urban development tends to increase
the population density, and to accommodate them, high -rise buildings is an
efficient solution.
High-rise buildings let high density concentration possible, hence the high -
density-low-coverage concepts of the urban area are defined by high -rise
buildings.
Higher density tends to high concentration of infrastructure. More of transit
facilities and waste management plans. Thus giving rise to the urban
character of mass transit and the current development in city transit systems.
[2]
Due high-rise buildings, the population density could increase in the centre of
the city (as per the demand specified earlier), thus concepts like CBD came
into urban planning.
As we increase the height of the building, we need to go deeper, so in
traditional high-rise building design, Architects end up in many unused service
basement floors, leading to a rise in urban anti -social activities. [4]
Economic development of the urban areas is in direct proportion to the high -
rise buildings. More high -rise buildings mean more commerce and thus an
ever increasing economy. [3]
