For my internship, I chose the Make-A-Wish Foundation, in Marietta. From day one I

knew that there were a few different sites that I would love to work with, and this organization

was at the top of my list, and my number one choice! I have always loved what this foundation

does for children with critical illnesses, and the impact that they can bring them and their

families. Many people sent in applications to this organization, and I got chosen for a phone

interview. I was very relaxed, and comfortable when talking about things I feel passionate about

regarding public health and my accomplishments. I felt prepared, and although a little nervous

and stumbling over a few of my words, I got the chance to take it to the next level, which was an

in-person interview. I was quizzed on various situations and how I would handle them. During

this interview she mentioned something that was truly inspiring. She told me that every thirty-

four minutes a child’s wish is granted. This was shocking to me. This is the moment I knew that

I wanted to be a part of this organization and put in as much effort as I can to help build the

number of wishes granted daily. I want to make an impact and see how my hard work can pay

off in the reward of seeing a happy child/family through the completion of a child’s wish being

granted.

Make-A-Wish is a foundation that grants wishes to children who are suffering from

critical illnesses. With how many wishes are being granted every half hour, they need extensive

help to make as many dreams come true as possible. They have many thousands of staff,

supporters, volunteers, and donors to help complete tasks needed to make the wishes a reality. I
will be a part of a team that visits the children in the hospital who have sent in wish requests. We

will collectively be deciding how to make the child’s wish a reality and how to exactly make this

happen. Another task I will have will be to call the parents and inform them when their child’s

wish has been granted. This process will help strengthen my phone skills, team building skills,

and this will be the first time working with children as my population. I also chose this

organization to get out of my comfort zone. I do want to go into the medical field, so I will be in

situations where I would nurse sick children. I am very emotional, so I think this will be

challenging seeing children in such conditions, but the feeling of seeing the impact we can have

on a child’s life is all the inspiration I need to go at this internship with confidence and be as

successful as possible!
