1. Introduction

This bibliography provides a list of references on the topology and shape optimization of structures
where the nite element and boundary element techniques have been implemented. General solution
techniques as well as problem-speci c applications are included. The entries have been retrieved
from the author’s database, MAKEBASE. They are grouped into two main sections:
• nite elements,
• boundary elements.
The references have been published in scienti c journals, conference proceedings, and theses=
dissertations between 1999 –2001 (the rst seven months of 2001) [1–181,206–219]. Some pre-
viously published papers, reviews and theses on the topology and shape optimization by means of
nite element and boundary element methods in general can be found in entries [182 –205]. of the
Finite element methods section and in [220 –230] of the Boundary element methods section of this
bibliography, respectively. The references are sorted in each category alphabetically according to the
rst author’s name.
