About PTCL.

In 1990 T&T transformed into a wholly-owned Government corporation i.e. Pakistan

Telecommunication Corporation (PTC) under the Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation
Ordinance issued on December 15, 1990.
Proper legislative action being taken in 1991 through the promulgation of the Pakistan
Telecommunication Corporation Act (Act XVIII of 1991).
The primary objective of this structural change was to create an entity financially independent of
the Government while maintaining the existing inflows into the Government treasury.
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited is the largest telecommunication company in
Pakistan. This company provides telephony services to the nation and still holds the status of
backbone for country's telecommunication infrastructure despite arrival of a dozen other telcos
including telecom giants like Telenor and China Mobile . The company consists of around 2000
telephone exchanges across country providing largest fixed line network. GSM, CDMA and
Internet are other resources of PTCL, making it a gigantic organization. The Government of
Pakistan sold 26% shares and control of the company to Etisalat in 2006. The Government of
Pakistan retained 62% of the shares while the remaining 12% are held by the general public.
An over view
PTCL have a wide networking infrastructure we indulge into detail of internet infrastructure and
find out reliable erumpent PTCL using to gain a competitive edge in the industry.

Network structure
As we mentioned above PTCL is exhibiting a wide infrastructure of networking comprising of
three main hubs namely Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi basic specifications of hubs are given
below.

LAHORE HUB:
The region of Lahore covers central as well as northern and southern region of Punjab aiming at
providing high quality telecommunication and networking services to employees. Hubs are
linked with call center situated with hubs controlling major functions of hubs. in connection call
center are connected with exchanges of defined area by ptcl head office. Lahore hubs are linked
with 2xE3 channels with call center. one E3 is used for basic connectivity and other E3 is used as
backup.

ISLAMABAD HUB:
The region of Islamabad covers central as well as northern and southern region of potohar and
Sarhad aiming at providing high quality telecommunication and networking services to
employees. Hubs are linked with call center situated with hubs controlling major functions of
hubs. in connection call center are connected with exchanges of defined area by ptcl head office.
Lahore hubs are linked with E3 and E1 channels with call center. E1 is used for basic
connectivity and other E3 is used as backup.

KARACHI HUB:
The region of Karachi covers whole Sind as well as Balochistan aiming at providing high quality
telecommunication and networking services to employees. Hubs are linked with call center
situated with hubs controlling major functions of hubs. In connection call center are connected
with exchanges of defined area by ptcl head office. Lahore hubs are linked with 2xE3 channels
with call center. one E3 is used for basic connectivity and other E3 is used as backup.

TWO WAY CONNECTIVITY:

Three main hubs are connected through two way method.

1. PIE CLOUD.

2 .MPLS.
1. PIE CLOUD: (PAKISTAN INTERNET EXCHANGE)

Three main hubs make their efficient connectivity through pie cloud services. PTCL have
legal agreement with OLI which manages PIE CLOUD .PIE CLOUD have its own infrastructure
and provides its services to access internet cloud between hubs. PIE is connected with other
world with fiber cable from Karachi hub.

The E-mail and E-Commerce traffic between internet users of different Internet Service
Providers (ISPs) in Pakistan will not be going to Internet Hub in the US for its return journey
after the installation of PTCL’s Pakistan Internet Exchange which handles Intra ISP traffic on
PTCL’s backbone within the country.
ISPs and local users both stand to benefit of the newly installed Pakistan Internet Exchange
through savings in bandwidth cost and faster transit time for internet users. The PTCL is already
providing internet access in more than 550 cities of Pakistan, and now the internet exchange will
speed up contacts between users in these cities.
More than 122 customers including more than 60 ISPs, 30 data and corporate users and
educational institutions have already shifted the routing of their internet traffic to PTCL’s
Internet Exchange.

2. MPLS ( Multi protocol label switching)

Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a core networking technology that Operates
essentially in between Layers 2 and 3 of the OSI model; for this reason, MPLS can overlay
existing technologies such as ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) or Frame Relay, or it can
operate in an entirely IP native environment; this can allow users to take advantage of existing
CPE(Customer Premises Equipment) while making a move towards converging all network
traffic, such as data, video and voice, at a pace that users can accommodate and afford. MPLS
provides its users a number of advantageous features such as traffic engineering, network
convergence, failure protection, and the ability to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) over IP.
MPLS Vans take advantage of the inherent characteristics of MPLS to provide secure data
networking, typically for business users, in conjunction with other.
Over requirements

 PTCL uses stare topology in local area network.

 PTCL uses in Local area network UTP Cat 5 cables and in WAN copper fiber, glass fiber
and different other cables are used in ptcl depending on the media.
 PTCL uses 100 Mbps bandwidth.
 PTCL uses private IP Class
A: 10.0.0.0
B: 172.16.0.0
C: 192.168.10.0
 PTCL uses different types of servers namely Dell, IBM, Sunsoil, HP.
 PTCL uses CISCO and Jonipeer routers. And also switches in layer 3 and layer 2. Layer
3 switches work as router also.

 PTCL also contribution in the ICT services in Pakistan. PTCL organized internship, and
training in the PTCL. It also has a department of IP in NUST. And PTCL has its own
university in the Islamabad name ICT.

 PTCL uses different types ICT services which are use to make a work more efficiently
and making communication more reliable in his network. Ptcl is using different
application software to make a work fast. I.e. ERPs, SQL for data base and also using
some security software to save the system from the hackers and viruses namely MRTG,
Orin NPM act.

 PTCL manage by follow the guide lines and polices, and procedures.
