Mormones: ¿Son Cristianos?
Mormones: ¿Son Cristianos?
There's a lot of discussion about Mormon beliefs. So, in order to make this easy, I will
list out what Mormonism actually teaches. These are not sensationalized, and inaccurate
statements.
Following documentation from Mormon authors. Finally, please understand that the
Mormon Church uses Christian terms but has radically changed the meanings of those
terms. So, when it says that Mormons belief in the father the son and the Holy Spirit,
they are really saying they believe in a God from another planet, with a goddess wife,
who literally is the father of Jesus, and that there is a spirit being, the Holy Ghost, who is
another God.
Is it Christian? No.
If you were to go to any Christian bookstore and look in the non-Christian cult section
you will see numerous books on Mormonism that document Mormon beliefs as aberrant
and un-Biblical. The Mormon Church is not considered a Christian church.
This is not simply an opinion that they are false; it is a fact that they teach abberant and
unchristian theology. In fact, Jesus warned us about such groups when he said in
Matthew 24:24 that in the last days many false Christs and false prophets will arise and
deceive many. Mormonism is exactly that, a manifestation of a false prophet: Joseph
Smith, who taught all these things.
-2-
The Bible does not teach that God came from another planet, or that he has a goddess
wife, or that we can become gods. In fact, the Bible clearly and definitely contradicts
those teachings. But, the Mormon Church responds by saying that the Bible is not really
trustworthy, that the true faith was lost, and that its leader, Joseph Smith, restored the so-
called "true" Christian faith: god from another world, becoming gods, goddess mother,
etc. Of course, the Mormon Church's claim is not true.
One question to ask the Mormon Church as a whole is why is it that it does not appoint a
representative to publicly debate and answer the challenges of competent Christians who
know not only the Bible, but what Mormonism teaches? Why is it that the Mormon
Church refuses to have open dialogue and appoint a representative who would attempt to
defend the LDS teachings from the Bible? Why does it refuse to do this? I believe it is
because it doesn't want to be made to look bad.
1. Book of Mormon
1. The book of Mormon is more correct than the Bible, (History of the
Church, vol. 4, p. 461.)
2. Devil, the
1. The Devil was born as a spirit after Jesus "in the morning of pre-
existence," (Mormon Doctrine, p. 192.)
2. Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in
heaven to them both, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163.)
3. God
1. God used to be a man on another planet (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321; Joseph
Smith, Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of
Discourses, vol. 2, p. 345; Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7,
p. 333).
2. "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as mans..." (D&C
130:22).
4. God, becoming a god
1. After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a
god (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345-347, 354).
2. "Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they
be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they
be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be
gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them,"
(DC 132:20).
5. God, many gods
1. There are many gods (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163).
2. "And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light: and there was light," (Book
of Abraham 4:3).

accepted. In effect the Devil wanted to be the Savior of all Mankind and to
"deny men their agency and to dethrone god," (Mormon Doctrine, p. 193;
Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 8).
3. Jesus' sacrifice was not able to cleanse us from all our sins, (murder and
repeated adultery are exceptions), (Journal of Discourses, vol. 3, 1856, p.
247).
4. Good works are necessary for salvation (Articles of Faith, p. 92).
5. There is no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith as a prophet of God
(Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p. 188).
6. "The first effect [of the atonement] is to secure to all mankind alike,
exemption from the penalty of the fall, thus providing a plan of General
Salvation. The second effect is to open a way for Individual Salvation
whereby mankind may secure remission of personal sins (Articles of
Faith, by James Talmage, p. 78-79).
7. "As these sins are the result of individual acts it is just that forgiveness for
them should be conditioned on individual compliance with prescribed
requirements -- 'obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel,'"
(Articles of Faith, p. 79).
8. "This grace is an enabling power that allows men and women to lay hold
on eternal life and exaltation after they have expended their own best
efforts," (LDS Bible Dictionary, p. 697).
9. "We know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do," (2
Nephi 25:23).
14. Trinity, the
1. The trinity is three separate Gods: The Father, the Son, and the Holy
Ghost. "That these three are separate individuals, physically distinct from
each other, is demonstrated by the accepted records of divine dealings
with man," (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 35).
aberrantes y no Cristianas.
levantarían y engañarían a muchos.

10. Tithing/Diezmo
While tithes are not uncommon among religion, rarely are they mandatory. LDS theology
states that in order to make it to the highest kingdom of heaven, you must pay a full and
honest tithe.
-9-
This is one of the most famous pieces of LDS doctrine. It’s also the cause of many myths
about Mormons. Basically; no coffee, no drugs, no tobacco.
uso del hombre con acción de gracias, sin embargo se van a utilizar con moderación;
hambre.

8. Spirits/Espiritus
This one is very unique to the LDS faith. Basically, everyone on earth now was a spirit in
the pre-existence. When we die, our spirits are separated from our bodies and if we were
good they go to “spirit paradise.” If we were bad they go to “spirit prison.” The spirit
world exists as a place for spirits to go while awaiting the second coming.
D & C 138: 8-14
8 "Por el cual también fue y predicó a los espíritus encarcelados;
los justos, que habían sido fieles en el testimonio de Jesús mientras vivieron en la carne;
Almost everyone who knows anything about the Mormon religion knows they have a
prophet. What many don’t know, is anything that the prophet says in official capacity is
considered official canon.
9 And thus ye shall become instructed in the law of my church, and be sanctified by that
which ye have received, and ye shall bind yourselves to act in all holiness before me—
ante ustedes como revelaciones o mandamientos;
The Book of Mormon is a book of LDS scripture that takes place during the same time as
the Bible and takes place on the American continent. It follows the stories of two tribes
who descended from the family of Lehi. After Jesus’ resurrection LDS people believe he
visited the peoples of the Americas.
8 And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven;
and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white
robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole
multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to
another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared
unto them.
9 And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying:
10 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.
11 And behold, I am the alight and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that
bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon
me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things
from the beginning.
12 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words the whole multitude fell
to the earth; for they remembered that it had been prophesied among them that Christ
should show himself unto them after his ascension into heaven.
3 Nefi 11: 7-12
7 He aquí mi Hijo Amado, en quien me complazco, en quien he glorificado mi nombre: a

While most religions believe in God, the LDS religion believes in God, Jesus and the
Holy Spirit as separate beings. They also believe that God, Jesus and resurrected beings
have bodies of “flesh and bone.”
D&C 129:1-5
1 There are two kinds of beings in heaven, namely: Angels, who are resurrected
personages, having bodies of flesh and bones—
2 For instance, Jesus said: Handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye
see me have.
3 Secondly: the spirits of just men made perfect, they who are not resurrected, but inherit
the same glory.
4 When a messenger comes saying he has a message from God, offer him your hand and
request him to shake hands with you.
5 If he be an angel he will do so, and you will feel his hand.
4. Priesthood/Sacerdocio
In the LDS religion any worthy male can be given the priesthood and is given specific
duties. Black people were not allowed to have the priesthood until 1978. Females are not
allowed to have the priesthood.
In LDS doctrine there are three heavens: the Celestial Kingdom, Terrestrial Kingdom,
and Telestial Kingdom. The Celestial is the highest, where God and the ones who
followed his law reside. The Terrestrial is the middle, where people who followed the
Law of Moses reside. The Telestial is the lowest, where the ones who followed carnal
law reside.
ve, y saben como son conocidos, habiendo recibido de su plenitud y de su gracia;
mundo telestial;
2. Forgiveness/Arrepentimiento
In LDS theology you can be forgiven for any sin, save two. First, denying the Holy Spirit,
and second, murder. Also, God is infinitely forgiving, until the second coming. After that,
you end up where you end up, no matter what. There are no second chances. Period.
D&C 18: 42
18 And now, behold, I speak unto the church. Thou shalt not kill; and he that kills shall
not have forgiveness in this world, nor in the world to come.
45 Y al final del mismo, ni el lugar de la misma, ni su tormento, ningún hombre lo sabe;
D & C 18: 42
18 Y ahora, he aquí, hablo a la iglesia.
propias obras, su propio dominio, en las mansiones que están preparadas;
This deserves some explanation. Mormons believe that God created multiple worlds and
each world has people living on it. They also believe that multiple Gods exist but each
has their own universe. We are only subject to our God and if we obtain the highest level
of heaven we can become gods ourselves.
D&C 76: 24
24 That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the
inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.
D&C 93: 10
10 The worlds were made by him; men were made by him; all things were made by him,
and through him, and of him.
Moses 1: 33
33 And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own
purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.
- 20 -
Sólo estamos sujetos a nuestro Dios y
D & C 131: 1-5
1 En la gloria celestial hay tres cielos o grados;
sacerdocio [es decir, la alianza nueva y eterna del matrimonio];
Is Mormonism Christian? This may seem like a puzzling question to many Mormons as
well as to some Christians. Mormons will note that they include the Bible among the four
books which they recognize as Scripture, and that belief in Jesus Christ is central to their
faith, as evidenced by their official name, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Furthermore, many Christians have heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing Christian
- 21 -
hymns and are favorably impressed with the Mormon commitment to high moral
standards and strong families. Doesn’t it follow that Mormonism is Christian?
morales y familias fuertes. ¿Sigue pensando que el mormonismo es cristiano?
"To fairly and accurately resolve this question we need to carefully compare the basic
doctrines of the Mormon religion with the basic doctrines of historic, biblical
Christianity."
To fairly and accurately resolve this question we need to carefully compare the basic
doctrines of the Mormon religion with the basic doctrines of historic, biblical
Christianity. To represent the Mormon position we have relied on the following well-
known Mormon doctrinal books, the first three of which are published by the Mormon
Church: Gospel Principles (1997), Achieving a Celestial Marriage (1976), and A Study of
the Articles of Faith (1979) by Mormon Apostle James E. Talmage, as well as Doctrines
of Salvation (3 vols.) by the tenth Mormon President and prophet Joseph Fielding Smith,
Mormon Doctrine (2nd ed., 1979) by Mormon apostle Bruce R. McConkie and
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith.
presidente y profeta mormón Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrina Mormona (2 ª ed., 1979)
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that there is
only one True and Living God and apart from Him there are no other Gods
(Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10,11; 44:6,8; 45:21,22; 46:9; Mark 12:29-34).
- 22 -
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that there are many Gods (Book of
Abraham 4:3ff), and that we can become gods and goddesses in the celestial kingdom
(Doctrine and Covenants 132:19-20; Gospel Principles, p. 245; Achieving a Celestial
Marriage, p. 130). It also teaches that those who achieve godhood will have spirit
children who will worship and pray to them, just as we worship and pray to God the
Father (Gospel Principles, p. 302).
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that
God is Spirit (John 4:24; 1 Timothy 6:15,16), He is not a man (Numbers 23:19;
Hosea 11:9; Romans 1:22, 23), and has always (eternally) existed as God — all
powerful, all knowing, and everywhere present (Psalm 90:2; 139:7-10; Isaiah
40:28; Luke 1:37).
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that God the Father was once a
man like us who progressed to become a God and has a body of flesh and
bone (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22; "God himself was once as we are now,
and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!" from Teachings of
the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 345-347; Gospel Principles, p. 9; Articles of Faith,
p. 430; Mormon Doctrine, p. 321). Indeed, the Mormon Church teaches that
God himself has a father, and a grandfather, ad infinitum (Teachings of the
Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 373; Mormon Doctrine, p. 577). 2.
Espíritu (Juan 4:24; 1 Timoteo 6:15,16), él no es un hombre (Números 23:19;
todopoderoso, omnisciente y omnipresente (Salmo 90:2; 139:7-10; Isaías 40:28;
Lucas 1:37).
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that
Jesus is the unique Son of God; he has always existed as God, and is co-eternal
and co-equal with the Father (John 1:1, 14; 10:30; 14:9; Colossians 2:9). While
never less than God, at the appointed time He laid aside the glory He shared with
the Father (John 17:4, 5; Philippians 2:6-11) and was made flesh for our salvation;
His incarnation was accomplished through being conceived supernaturally by the
Holy Spirit and born of a virgin (Matthew 1:18-23; Luke 1:34-35).
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that Jesus Christ is our elder
brother who progressed to godhood, having first been procreated as a spirit
child by Heavenly Father and a heavenly mother; He was later conceived
physically through intercourse between Heavenly Father and the virgin
Mary (D&C 93:21; Journal of Discourses, 1:50-51; Gospel Principles, p. 11-13;
Achieving a Celestial Marriage, p. 129; Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine,
pp. 546-547; 742; Ezra Taft Benson, Come unto Christ, p. 4; Robert L. Millet,
The Mormon Faith: Understanding Restored Christianity, p. 31). Mormon
doctrine affirms that Jesus, all angels, Lucifer, all demons, and all human beings
are originally spirit brothers and sisters (Abraham 3:22-27; Moses 4:1-2; Gospel
Principles, pp. 17-18; Mormon Doctrine, p. 192).
p. 192).
4. Is God a Trinity?
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost are not separate Gods or separate
beings, but are distinct Persons within the one Triune Godhead. Throughout the
New Testament the Son and the Holy Spirit, as well as the Father are separately
identified as and act as God (Son: Mark 2:5-12; John 20:28; Philippians 2:10,11;
Holy Spirit: Acts 5:3,4; 2 Corinthians 3:17,18; 13:14); yet at the same time the
Bible teaches that these three are only one God (see point 1).
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
are three separate Gods (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 370;
Mormon Doctrine, pp. 576-577), and that the Son and Holy Ghost are the
literal offspring of Heavenly Father and a celestial wife (Joseph Fielding
McConkie, Encyclopedia of Mormonism, vol. 2, p. 649).
20:28, Filipenses 2:10,11; Espíritu Santo: Hechos 5:3,4, 2 Corintios 3:17,18;
5. Was The Sin Of Adam and Eve a Great Evil Or a Great Blessing?
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that
the disobedience of our first parents Adam and Eve was a great evil. Through
their fall sin entered the world, bringing all human beings under condemnation
and death. Thus we are born with a sinful nature, and will be judged for the sins
we commit as individuals. (Ezekiel 18:1-20; Romans 5:12-21).
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that Adam’s sin was "a necessary
step in the plan of life and a great blessing to all of us" (Gospel Principles, p.
- 25 -
33; Book of Mormon — 2 Nephi 2:25; Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, pp. 114-
A través
juzgado por los pecados que cometemos como individuos. (Ezequiel 18:1-20;
Romanos 5:12-21).
1, pp 114-115).
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that apart from
the saving work of Jesus Christ on the cross we are spiritually "dead in trespasses and
sins" (Ephesians 2:1,5) and are powerless to save ourselves. By grace alone, apart from
self-righteous works, God forgives our sins and makes us worthy to live in His presence
(Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5-6). Our part is only to cling to Christ in heartfelt faith.
(However, it is certainly true that without the evidence of changed conduct, a person’s
testimony of faith in Christ must be questioned; salvation by grace alone through faith,
does not mean we can live as we please — Romans 6:1-4).
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that eternal life in the presence of God
(which it terms "exaltation in the celestial kingdom") must be earned through
obedience to all the commands of the Mormon Church, including exclusive Mormon
temple rituals. Works are a requirement for salvation (entrance into the "celestial
kingdom") — Gospel Principles, p. 303-304; Pearl of Great Price — Third Article of
Faith; Mormon Doctrine, pp. 339, 671; Book of Mormon — 2 Nephi 25:23). ¿Podemos
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that
the purpose of the atoning work of Christ on the cross was to provide the
complete solution for humankind’s sin problem. However, those who reject God’s
grace in this life will have no part in this salvation but are under the judgment of
God for eternity (John 3:36; Hebrews 9:27; 1 John 5:11-12).
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that the purpose of the atonement
was to bring resurrection and immortality to all people, regardless of
whether they receive Christ by faith. Christ’s atonement is only a partial
basis for worthiness and eternal life, which also requires obedience to all the
commands of the Mormon church, including exclusive Mormon temple
rituals (Gospel Principles, pp. 74-75; Mormon Doctrine, p. 669).
5:11-12).
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that
the Bible is the unique, final and infallible Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16;
Hebrews 1:1,2; 2 Peter 1:21) and that it will stand forever (1 Peter 1:23-25).
God’s providential preservation of the text of the Bible was marvelously
illustrated in the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that the Bible has been corrupted, is
missing many "plain and precious parts" and does not contain the fullness of
the Gospel (Book of Mormon — 1 Nephi 13:26-29; Doctrines of Salvation, vol.
3, pp. 190-191).
The Bible teaches and orthodox Christians through the ages have believed that
the true Church was divinely established by Jesus and could never and will never
disappear from the earth (Matthew 16:18; John 15:16; 17:11). Christians
acknowledge that there have been times of corruption and apostasy within the
Church, but believe there has always been a remnant that held fast to the biblical
essentials.
By contrast, the Mormon Church teaches that there was a great and total
apostasy of the Church as established by Jesus Christ; this state of apostasy
"still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored
gospel" of the Mormon Church (Gospel Principles, pp. 105-106; Mormon
Doctrine, p. 44).
restaurado" de la Iglesia Mormona ( Principios del Evangelio, pp 105-106;
Doctrina Mormona, p. 44).
Conclusion: The above points in italics constitute the common gospel believed by all
orthodox Christians through the ages regardless of denominational labels. On the other
hand, some new religions such as Mormonism claim to be Christian, but accept as
- 28 -
Scripture writings outside of the Bible, teach doctrines that contradict the Bible, and hold
to beliefs completely foreign to the teachings of Jesus and His apostles.
Mormons share with orthodox Christians some important moral precepts from the Bible.
However, the above points are examples of the many fundamental and irreconcilable
differences between historic, biblical Christianity and Mormonism. While these
differences do not keep us from being friendly with Mormons, we cannot consider them
brothers and sisters in Christ. The Bible specifically warns of false prophets who will
teach "another gospel" centered around "another Jesus," and witnessed to by "another
spirit" (2 Corinthians 11:4,13-15; Galatians 1:6-9). Based on the evidence presented
above, we believe Mormonism represents just such a counterfeit gospel.
evangelio falso.
It has been pointed out that if one claimed to be a Mormon but denied all the basic tenets
of Mormonism — that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, that the Book of Mormon is
true and divinely inspired, that god was once a man who progressed to godhood through
keeping the laws and ordinances of the Mormon Church, and that the Mormon Church
was divinely established — the Mormon Church would reject such a person’s claim to
being a Latter-day Saint. One cannot fairly call oneself a Mormon if one does not believe
the fundamental doctrines taught by the Mormon Church. By the same token, if the
Mormon Church does not hold to even the basic biblical truths believed by the greater
Christian community down through the ages, how can Christians reasonably be expected
to accept Mormonism as authentic Christianity?
No obstante
- 29 -
If the Mormon Church believes it is the only true Christian Church, it should not attempt
to publicly present itself as a part of a broader Christian community. Instead it should tell
the world openly that those who claim to be orthodox Christians are not really Christians
at all, and that the Mormon Church is the only true Christian Church. This in fact is what
it teaches privately, but not publicly.
Despite their claims that they "know with every fiber of their being" that Joseph Smith
was a real live prophet, that Gordon B. Hinckley is a real live prophet, that the Mormon
Church contains the fullness of God's truth, etc., they also fear losing their testimony. For
example, they don't want to read certain things, or be disobedient to their leaders,
because, among other things, they fear that they will "lose their testimony".
On the one hand their testimony consists of the most confident declarations of sure
knowledge imaginable, while on the other hand they fear being exposed to information
that could make them "lose their testimony". What is wrong with this picture?
Spencer W. Kimball said, "Do you think that you can go three, and six and nine and
twelve months without bearing your testimony and still keep its full value?"
- 30 -
dijo?-
Does one have to declare confidently every morning that the sun will rise in the East in
order to retain the knowledge that it does indeed rise in the east? Can you lose your
knowledge that the sun moves from east to west, if you don't declare it confidently to
others several times a year? Would a person lose their certain knowledge by reading a
book that claims that the sun rises in the west, and that Californians who look at the sun
setting in the west just don't know any better? Would people fret about such a book being
a threat to their knowledge when all they have to do is wait for the next sunrise to
reconfirm everything they already know?

.: BAPTISM FOR THE DEAD - Is Mormon Baptism for the Dead a Christian
Practice?
1 CORINTHIANS 15:29: "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead,
if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?"
Latter-day Saints (Mormons) believe that water baptism by immersion “is the first saving
ordinance of the gospel….All who seek eternal life must follow the example of the
Savior by being baptized and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.”(True to the Faith,
2004, p. 21) Baptism, according to Mormonism, is the prerequisite to receiving the “gift
of the Holy Ghost” and is a necessary step in the process of being exalted to the highest
level of heaven. Believing that non-Mormon dead relatives will have an opportunity to
receive the Mormon “restored gospel” in “spirit prison,” Latter-day Saints take it upon
themselves to help “save” them by engaging in proxy baptism on behalf of their dead
ancestors. Mormon Apostle Bruce R McConkie explains:
“…though held captive in the spirit prison, these prisoners of hope looked
forward with desire and expectation to their redemption…a redemption
that would be complete only after baptism for the dead had been
performed for them in this mortal sphere where there is water.”—Mormon
Doctrine, p. 601
- 32 -
Appealing to 1 Corinthians 15:29 and Hebrews 11:40 for Biblical support, Joseph Smith
claimed that “the greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us
[Mormons] is to seek after our dead….every spirit in the eternal world can be ferreted out
and saved.…And so you can see how far you can be a savior….This doctrine was the
burden of the scriptures. Those Saints who neglect it in behalf of their deceased relatives,
do it at the peril of their own salvation.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 1976,
by Joseph Fielding Smith, p. 356-357, 193)
bautizados.
Just as Biblical Scripture presents water baptism as a sign (not seal) of salvation, there’s
no indication in Scripture that early Christians engaged in the practice of “baptism for the
dead.” The only place the practice is mentioned is in 1 Corinthians 15:29. It is important
to note that in this passage, Paul excluded himself and the Christian believers he was
speaking to by his use of the terms “they” and “them” in reference to the practice. It is
likely that Paul had in mind heretical groups such as the Cerinthians and Marcionites who
practiced a form of baptism for the dead. It appears that Paul was pointing to groups such
as these as examples of those whose practice would be futile if Christ had not indeed
raised from the dead. If such practice is indeed essential for salvation, we ask why the
lack of emphasis in the Bible and Book of Mormon? With genealogical research being a
necessary activity for “baptism for the dead,” we ask why the Bible warns against this
practice when it states:
Thus we conclude that contrary to the Mormon notion that we all can be “saviors” by
"redeeming our dead" ancestors though baptism, the Bible proclaims:
“None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a
ransom for him:”—Psalm 49:7
“…I saw two Personages… One of them…said, pointing to the other —This is My
Beloved Son. Hear Him!… During…the time… I was left to all kinds of temptations… I

“Ye are of your father the devil… He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode

“Nothing less than a complete apostasy from the Christian religion would warrant the
establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”—History of the
Church, Volume 1, p. XL
According to LDS Scripture, the Apostle John (D&C 7) and the three Nephites (3 Nephi
28) never died. So, how could Gospel “authority” have left the earth, needing
“restoration”?
“…in the latter times some shall depart from the faith…”—1 Timothy 4:1
If only “some” would depart from the faith, how could a “complete apostasy” have
occurred? Did Jesus fail to preserve His Church against the gates of hell?
“I will build MY church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” —Matthew
16:18

which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” —Galatians 1:9
Where did Jesus carry our sins? Was it in the Garden of Gethsemane or on the
Cross?

Which “blood” reconciles us? Is it the “blood” of the Garden or the “blood of the
cross”?
“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to
reconcile all things unto himself.” —Colossians 1:20
“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ…”—Galatians 6:14
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but
unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”—1 Corinthians 1:18

“Those without eternal marriage may be angels. Now, the angels will be the people
who…did not have their work done in the temple… But if we …seal our wives or
husbands to us… then we may become gods and pass by the angels in heaven.”—
Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, p. 51
“ ‘Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? For they all had
her.’ Jesus answered and said unto them, ‘Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the
power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage,
but are as the angels of God in heaven.’ ” —Matthew 22:28-30
- 40 -
'"-Mateo 22:28-30
“And Jesus answering said… ‘The children of this world marry, and are given in
marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the
resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither can
they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God,
being the children of the resurrection.’ ” —Luke 20:34-36
Lucas 20:34-36.
“ ‘Some revelations are of God: some revelations are of man: and some
revelations are of the devil.’ ” —Prophet Joseph Smith, Address to All
Believers in Christ, 1887, by David Whitmer
If Joseph Smith couldn’t tell where his “revelations” were coming from, how do we
know which ones to believe?
1887, p. 31
“…in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits,
and doctrines of devils;”—1 Timothy 4:1
.:DID JOSEPH SMITH CHANGE HIS DOCTRINE THAT GOD HAS ALWAYS
BEEN GOD?

unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity.” —Moroni 8:18, Book of Mormon
Did Joseph Smith preach a “changeable” God who has not always been “God from
all eternity”?
eternidad"?
“I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that
God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea.…he was once a man like us;
yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ
himself did…” —Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 345-346
