ESTABLISHMENT OF REFERENCE INTERVALS OF SERUM LIPID PROFILE AND

FBS/PLBS FROM NORMAL HEALTHY POPULATION IN GANDHI HOSPITAL

INTRODUCTION: Normal Values are generally, statistically and biologically significant qualitative
and/or quantitative measurements of cellular and clinical components of the body. The values derived
from such measurements are based on averages of a survey of presumably healthy persons. Reference
interval is the range of normal values.
Reference interval concept was introduced by IFCC (international federation of clinical chemistry), but all
these reference values were based on reference with western population. They usually do not match with
our Indian population, as the serum lipid levels and sugar levels vary with many factors including age,
sex, diet, life style, racial difference, genes etc. So it is important to have our own reference values.

As heart diseases and diabetes are the major causes for the morbidity and mortality in India also it is
important to prevent the disorders, and for this it is necessary to have accurate reference intervals based
on Indian population of the lipid profile and blood sugars.

AIM: The main objective of this study is to establish baseline levels of serum lipids and blood glucose in
healthy population of different ages (18-45yrs), in Hyderabad and set up reference values and compare
these values with the internationally recommended ages.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 240 (120men and 120 women) healthy individuals blood
samples are tested from lower/middle class groups; here we are taking the attendants of the patients of
Gandhi hospital, based on the exclusion criteria given by the IFCC.
Exclusion criteria include:

1. Pathophysiological states-renal failure, CHF, chronic respiratory disorders, liver diseases,

malabsorption syndromes, nutritional anemia.
2. Systemic diseases- hypertension, diabetes mellitus.
3. Alcohol intake, tobacco, OC pills, supplementation therapy ex- insulin.
4. Pregnancy, mental disorders, depression.
5. Other factors –obesity (BMI-not more than 30kg/m 2).

The venous blood samples are taken in the morning after an overnight fasting and tested within 4-6hrs
in clinical biochemistry laboratory at Gandhi hospital.

 For estimation of FBS and lipid profile the individual should be fasting for atleast 12hrs ,and for
PLBS he/she should report 2hrs after meal
 The method used for glucose estimation is the GOD-POD method, and lipid profile is GOD-PA P
method, and the readings are taken in the colorimeter.

This introductory draft is submitted for the review and approval from the Ethical committee.
