How VUCA gives impact in your personal and work life? And how do you react?

In today’s generation, knowing how to solve issues relating to VUCA will definitely

make you successful in life. An established institution requires a leader that is ready to handle

the VUCA environment. A deep understanding, clear goals and mindset with the right

capabilities and practicing how to handle the VUCA environment is necessary for continuing

success today and in the future.

Going back when I was still studying in the university, I encountered a lot of experience

that helped me to be a strong person. Nevertheless, I never realized that even if I was still

studying before, I already experienced how complicated the VUCA environment was. Before, I

was a student leader and used to lead our college organization. First, I was afraid of the word

“change”. I used to settle on the things that are happening in my life: my daily routine, following

the rules and just accept whatever advices that were given to me. However, when I was put into

the position as an Auditory in our college organization, I learned to never settle on the things I

know that is not good. I realized that the world every day is changing and unpredictable. What

happens today might not be the same tomorrow. In this case, I learn to be futuristic and

visionary. Our environment is VOLATILE and we need to have the ability to see through the

chaos to have a clear VISION for their organizations.

True enough that the world is full of surprise. We live in the world that lacks predictability and it

is impossible for us to predict the future. Based on my experience, I never predicted what will

happen to me after I graduated the university. I was the young ambitious girl who wanted to be
successful in life. I thought at first that getting a job after graduating would be easy as what I

have seen on television. However, after graduation, I realized that everything was not true. All of

my plans in life were suddenly broken and I don’t have any back up plan for myself. I applied

almost all schools in Dumaguete and I did not expected that I wouldn’t get a job on any of them.

To be honest, the experience was awful but I learned not to give up. In this UNCERTAIN world,

we need to UNDERSTAND that sometimes, things happen not as what you want. Even if I look

for many jobs, I am still thankful because I was hired in an ESL school. The job that where I am

today was off course, never planned or I expected but the ability to understand the situation

makes you contented of what you have.

After getting my job, the problems didn’t even stop there. Now, I have more problems

that are not just about the culture that I know, this time, it needs more CLARITY of other culture.

Life is about COMPLEX situations that will make you stop and think to reflect. Sometimes, the

simple events that we have every day will be replaced into something that is difficult to

understand. Before, I used to understand only one culture, this time I learned to understand other

culture. Clarity is difficult to find especially of the language barrier that prohibits two cultures

from understanding. However, if you find one connection, it will never be a barrier for

understanding.

There are also some situations in my job wherein I need to decide quickly if I need to

push through or not. What’s good in my job right now is that they also encourage us to go out in

our community. There was a time wherein we need to help a local business in Dumaguete

together with Japanese students and I find making certain decisions hard. I am an education

graduate and was never into business and that made it difficult for me to decide. However,

because I know for the fact that in life, you need to be flexible enough with quality, I was able to
handle the situation. AGILITY or the ability to quickly and decide specific situations is

important in this AMBIGUOUS world. However, it is important to still keep a quality decision

despite of everything. Being impulsive sometimes makes us decide wrongly but it enables us to

practice how to handle specific problems on time.
