EXPERIMENT 2

LINEAR MEASUREMENT

1.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of this experiment, student should be able to:
i. Perform linear measurement by using various types of basic measurement
instruments such as vernier caliper, micrometer, optical comparator and
height gauge.
ii. Analyze the collection data using statistics.
iii. Verify process performance using statistics measures and process control
charts constructed from measurement data.

2.0 INTRODUCTION
This lab activity will be held in Metrology Laboratory. It covers topics : Statistics in
Measurement and Linier Measurement. Students will be divided into group consists of
3 to 4 students and the activities required teamwork cooperation. Students are
practicing in handling the basic measuring equipments such as various types of
vernier caliper, micrometer, optical comparator and height gauge in getting the
required dimensions. They are also needed to do the calibration of the equipment
before any measurements are taken. After completing the activities, students need to
analyze process performance by using statistics measures and control charts.

5.0 PROCEDURES
5.1 Planning for Data Collections
i. Referring to the attached drawing, identify and determine the
dimensions/points (as per indicated) to be measured.
Point A, Point B, Point C and two of large round shapes on the surface
of the sample.
ii. Identify and decide appropriate instruments that can be used to
measure the required dimensions/points accordingly.
iii. Decide who will do the calibration.
***Remark: assign different person for each dimension/point and
instrument
***Remark: At least 4 trials of data for each dimension/point.
***Remark: At least 10 samples for each dimension/point.
iv. Draft the recording format.

5.2 Measurement Process

i. Do the calibration for each instrument selected to be used.
ii. Record the calibration result on the calibration forms, calculate the
accuracy and determine the calibration status.
iii. Do the measurement for the required dimensions as shown in figure 1.
iv. Record the data.

5.3 Data analysis

i. Assess the process performance by using statistics method and control
charts.

6.0 MEASUREMENT RESULTS

i. Central tendency measures (mean, median and mode).
ii. Dispersion measures (range, variance and standard deviation).
iii. Control Chars (x-bar chart and R chart)

7.0 DISCUSSIONS
The results of lab activities shall be discussed as follows:
i. By refer to central tendency results, give comments on process
performance.
ii. By refer to dispersion results, give comments on process performance.
iii. Based on the control charts, determine whether the process is in control or
out of control. Explain briefly.

8.0 CONCLUSIONS
i. What is the relationship between measurements and statistics?
ii. Why measurement is important in statistics?
iii. How statistics based on measurement allow you to analyze or predict the
process performance?
iv. What are the impacts to the process and product quality if the
measurement data are not precise?
Note: Refer to appendices for the format of report.
