J
OANNES GEOMETRES (ca 935–1000), the son of what he
himself calls “a loyal servant” of the emperor (ÙtrhrÚw
yerãpvn), 1 was not only one of the leading poets and
rhetoricians of his time; he also served in the Byzantine army
as a high-ranking soldier (protospatharios?).2 Hence he be-
longed to the inner circles of literary and political Constan-
tinople. Shortly before 986 he was dismissed from military
service for reasons that are still unclear to us. He himself claims
that the combination of being both poet and soldier—ka‹ sof¤˙
yãllvn ka‹ tÒlm˙ krad¤hw—was unappreciated by the
authorities and envied by his fellow citizens, so he was
discharged.3 A more plausible reason, however, could be his
attachment to the faction of Basileios Nothos, who had been
acting as emperor since 976, because the legal heirs to the
throne, Basil II and Constantine, were too young to govern the
empire themselves; Nothos was deposed in 985.4 Be that as it
may, after his dismissal Geometres left his luxurious mansion in
the Mesomphalos area of the city and retired as a monk in the
