Celebrating Homosexuality in Dagtang Lason’s Nagmahal Ako

 I. Introduction

Original Pilipino Music originally referred only to Philippine pop songs

particularly ballad songs. Different groups popularized songs that clearly

reflect the sentimental character of OPM. (Wikipedia)

Dagtang Lason is composed of Buhawi, Kadedna and Magbaggs from

Olongapo City. These three have the rapping acumen on the spot or on board.

Their song “Nagmahal Ako” was based on the experience of their friend. The

music was created by the group and the chorus was adapted from “Alaala” of

White Lies. They named their group “Dagtang Lason” for they describe “dagta”

as “makapit”. “Parang bawat letrang nilalabas naming makapit siya sa masa

tapos nakakalason siya sa utak ng mga tao”, Kadedna stated.

Their songs have been well known to street slabs, gangs, gays and girls

spawning up to catching attention to few others. Their song “Nagmahal Ako”

was based on the experience of their friend. The music was created by the

group and the chorus was adapted from “Alaala” of White Lies. The song is a

painful abomination of a friend to a girl who broke his heart, thereby getting

a gay for a love instead. They won the Best Novelty Song of the year for the

single Nagmahal Ako. (Ancajas, 2011)

 II. Body

A. Feminism

Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies and social

movements that share a common goal to define, establish, and achieve

political, economic, personal and social equality of sexes. This includes seeking

to establish educational and professional opportunities for women that are

equal to those men.

“Mga tambay lang kami sawa sa babae

Mga babaeng manloloko, pineperahan lang kami”

The lyrics states that those men are fed up on girls are cheater or gold

digger because of their experiences. They still have no proof that all girls are

like that. It looks like they are saying that girls are just using them which is

not proven so that even those good ones are being treated the same.

B. Queer Theory

Queer Theory is a field of critical theory that emerged in the early 1990’s

out of the fields of queer studies and women ‘s studies. Queer Theory includes

both queer readings of texts and the theorization of queerness itself.

“Kaya ngayon bakla na lang ang aming iibigin

Masarap magmahal ng bakla”

 These lines state that those men say that they will choose gays instead

because they are more sweet and caring than girls because gays give all what

they wanted. They said that girls are gold digger, but in reality, they are just

using gays for money.

C. Binary Opposition

Based from the song all the girls
are bad and they said that they do
not want to love women again
because women just want money
from them and if they do not have
money they will just leave and you
don’t know if they are going back.
Without a need they suddenly
leave like a bubble. Because men
just want a really love for women
not just game and to fool them.
Based from the song, the gays have
good heart and always there if they
have a problem and always give
them happiness and true love not
like girls who all wanted was money
but not true love. And everything
that men want is always given by the
gays that is why other men want to
share there love to a gay then they
are showing their true love.

MGA TAMBAY NA LALAKI

The characteristics of the boys here in the song is broken hearted because the
woman that they love does not really love them because the girl only wants the
money from the boy and not a true love. Unlike gays, they want true love that is
why the boy shares his love to a gay even if they are both men At least they love
each other both and true to there feelings not like women.

III. Synthesis

The group Dagtang Lason conveyed the message to just love a gay

instead of a woman. The song views that women will always fool you

and how gay people are a better substitute than women. The song is

one sided to men’s side of the story. It also tells the acceptance of

loving gay people even having the same sex because their love is the

utmost importance.
