B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

Rationale
Background
Cupcakes started in the United States during the 19th century although the word cupcake was first used
as early as the year 1796 when a recipe notation “a cake to be baked in a small cup” was written in
American Cookery. According to the Food Timeline Web, food historians have not pinpoint exactly
where the name of the cupcake originated. There are two theories: one, the cakes were originally
cooked in cups and two, the ingredients used to make the cupcakes were measured out by the cup.
Cupcakes were sometimes called "number" cakes, because they were easy to remember by the
measurements of ingredients it took to create them: One cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of
flour, four eggs, one cup of milk, and one spoonful of soda.

In today's culture, the term "cupcake" has come to mean than just a term of endearment. Cupcakes
nowadays are being decorated with toppings such as frostings, fruits, and chocolates to make it look
fancier and more attractive to the eye but also adds to the flavor. Aside from being sweet and pleasing
to the eye, cupcakes are made from combining flour and sugar together that is an excellent source of
carbohydrates that can provide the entire body sufficient amount of energy. Another great benefit of
the cupcake is the ultimate variety of the different flavor they offer and the ability to provide flavors
by creating several variations of the cupcake. The color of the cupcakes is inspired by the color of the
visible spectrum it depicts the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is only visible to the
human eye. As the visible spectrum compose of different color combine with cupcakes that is being
decorated with different stuffs, the product would have a good combination that would please the eyes
of the customers and that they would be familiarize with the color of the visible spectra.

OBJECTIVES: General and Specific

General
To be able to show the skills and creativity of chemistry students through selling of chemistry- related
products in the ChemKonek2019 event.

Specific

In particular, this project will:

Phase 1: The Chromatic Cupcakes ingredients will be purchased from local supermarkets and will be
prepared in the Adamson University.

Phase 2: The Chromatic Cupcakes are in the form of different wavelength aesthetic to show the
students the form and spectrum of different waves of energy..

EXPECTED OUTPUT
Chromatic Cupcakes
Successful production and selling of Chromatic Cupcakes. The product should be able to spark interest
for Chemistry as a science to the consumers. The cupcakes made must be representative of the
chemistry of colors, specifically the visible area of the electromagnetic spectrum. Doing so in an
aesthetic manner and providing different flavors for the cupcakes. The product intends to present and
teach theses aspects of chemistry in a fun and enjoyable way in the form of a healthy and delicious food
item.

POTENTIAL IMPACT
Chromatic cupcakes are easy to prepare and to sell. A cupcake is a small cake designed to serve one
person, which may be baked in a small thin paper or aluminum cup. Filipino loves food and wants to
try something new. Making colorful cupcakes are catchy to the eyes of the buyers. Even if cupcake is
a mediocre it is still there and will not simply go away. It will be there at birthdays, graduations and
office parties. It will still elicit palpitations of excitement on sight, even from those who cursed its
constant attention, because fundamentally the cupcake’s enduring strength is its very essence: a cake
you can hold in your hand and eat without a fork. A cake you can eat anywhere.

FEASIBILITY ASSESSMENT
The chromatic cupcakes and lotion bar was created for the students of Adamson University so
that they can relate chemistry through application of food and other necessities. The feasibility
of this project will be made possible because students are always curious and conscious around
their environment.
