Mini-Interview

For this interview I decided to ask my father, Lorenzo Ventura these questions:

1.   How did you learn to play music? What did you play?

I took music lessons from a private music teacher. It was not classical music or formal training. I

started playing the accordion and singing in the church choir during the week and on weekends

when I was in elementary school. I kept playing and singing throughout high school as well.

2.   Can you read sheet music?

I was able to read sheet music at one time. My music teacher taught me very briefly how to read

sheet music but we did not spend a lot of time on it. It was more self taught along the way

through practice and looking at more music when playing the accordion and singing in choir.

Throughout time I slowly lost my ability to read sheet music, however, I’m sure if I looked at

one now I would not be totally lost.

3.   What form of notation do you use?

I never used notation to write music. I did use sheet music to learn music.

4.   What music do you listen to?

I listen to all types of music. I really enjoy R&B, soul, country Western, rock and roll and swing

music from the 30’s and 40’s. I even enjoy listening to classical music as well. No one told me

what music to listen to and I did not really listen to the music I was learning other than when I

was practicing or playing it.

5.   Why do you listen to the music you do?

There is no reason for listening to the music I do. I simply just enjoy good music. If I like the

beat in the music, I listen to it.

6.   Where did you play this music?

If you’re asking where I listen to it, I listen in the car and at home now. I do not perform

anymore but when I did, I performed at church, at home and with friends and family for fun.
