3 1.0 11
4 2.0 13
5 2.1 14
6 1.1 10

EXERCISE N°3:
Calculate the initial oil-in-place (N) of a volumetric oil reservoir if:
A = 1,600 acres, h = 32 ft, Ø = 22%, Siw = 20%, Boi = 1.23 bbl/STB

EXERCISE N°4:
Calculate the initial gas-in-place of a volumetric gas reservoir if:
A = 1,320 acres, h = 45 ft, Ø = 17.5%, Siw = 23%, Bgi = 0.004276 cuft/SCF

EXERCISE N°5:
A core 2.54 cm in length and 2.54 cm in diameter has a porosity of 22%. It is saturated with
oil and water. The oil volume is 1.5 cm3.
1. What is the pore volume of the core?
2. What are the oil and water saturations inside the core?

EXERCISE N°6:
1. If a formation is 2.5 m thick, what is the volume of oil-in-place (in barrels) of a 40.47
hectares area if the core described in EXERCISE N°4 is representative of the
reservoir?
2. Calculate the volume in cubic meters.

1
EXERCISE N°7:
Brine is used to measure the absolute permeability of a core plug. The rock sample is 4 cm
long and 3 cm3 in cross section. The brine has a viscosity of 1.0 cp and is flowing a constant
rate of 0.5cm3/sec under a 2.0 atm pressure differential.
Calculate the absolute permeability K in mD.

EXERCISE N°8:
A 10 cm long cylindrical core sample was subjected to a laboratory linear flow test under a
pressure differential of 3.4 atm using a fluid of viscosity 2.5 cp.
The diameter of the core is 4 cm.
A flow rate of 0.35 cm3/s was obtained.
Calculate the permeability of this core sample.

EXERCISE N°9:
Calculate average oil and connate water saturation from the following measurements:

Sample hi, ft Ø, % So, % Swc, %

1 1.0 10 75 25
2 1.5 12 77 23
3 1.0 11 79 21
4 2.0 13 74 26
5 2.1 14 78 22
6 1.1 10 75 25

EXERCISE N°10:
Calculate the pressure difference, i.e., capillary pressure, and capillary rise in an oil-water
system from the following data:

θ = 30° ρw = 1.0 gm/cm3 ρo = 0.75 gm/cm3

r = 10-4 cm σow = 25 dynes/cm

EXERCISE N°11:

Using the special core date of a homogeneous formation listed below:

Sw (%) Pc (kPa) h (m)

100 (WOC) 3.179 0.41
80 4.973 0.64
Swor = 70 6.039 0.77
60 8.348 1.07
50 12.434 1.59
40 19.894 2.55
35 24.867 3.18
30 33.749 4.32
Siw = 20 58.616 7.50

Where:
 Siw is the irreducible water saturation in the pore; where only mobile oil exists;
 Swor is the water saturation; where no mobile oil exists;

2
1. Calculate the height h (in meter) above the Free Water Level (P c = 0) for each value of Pc
listed in the above table. It should be noted that the density difference between the water
formation and the oil is 0.80 g/cm3.
2. If the irreducible water saturation (Siw) is estimated at 20% and the water saturation at
residual oil saturation is estimated at 70%, estimate the height of the transition zone where
the water is always produced along with the oil.

Data:

1 dyne/cm2 = 104 kPa

Gravitational constant g = 980 cm/s2

WOC = Water Oil Contact (Sw = 100%)

FWL = Free Water Level (Pc = 0)
