▪ Primary recovery results from the use of natural energy present
in a reservoir
► Solution-gas drive
► gas-cap drive
► natural water drive
► Reservoir compaction
► gravity drainage

Idealized Characteristics of an EOR process
▪ E = EDEV, where
► E = overall displacement efficiency (oil recovered by process/oil in place at start
of process)
► ED is microscopic displacement efficiency expressed as a fraction
► EV is macroscropic displacement efficiency expressed as a fraction.
▪ Microscopic displacement
► displacement or mobilization of oil at the pore scale
► ED is a measure of the effectiveness of the displacing fluid in moving (mobilizing)
the oil at those places in the rock where the displacing fluid contacts the oil.
▪ Macroscopic displacement
► Effectiveness of the displacing fluid(s) in contacting the reservoir in a volumetric
sense
► EV is a measure of how effectively the displacing fluid sweeps out the volume of a
reservoir, both areally and vertically, as well as how effectively the displacing fluid
moves the displaced oil toward production wells.

▪ Practical considerations
► Injecting Fluids may be expensive
► For thermal processes, cost of developing thermal energy that the fluids carry
may be high
► Nature of flow in porous media and rock/fluid interactions lead to diminished
effectiveness of injected fluid slugs
► Ease of handling an EOR fluid and its compatibility with physical
injection/production system

Classification of EOR processes
▪ Mobility-control
► Maintaining favourable mobility ratios to improve EV
► Thickening of water with polymers
▪ Chemical
► Combination of phase behaviour and IFT reduction to displace oil
► Surfactants or alkaline agents
▪ Miscible
► Inject fluids that are directly miscible with oil
► Hydrocarbon solvents or CO2
▪ Thermal
► Alteration of oil viscosity, favourable phase behaviour
► Steam injection or in-situ combustion from air or oxygen
