Zainul Abedin

Zainul Abedin was the legendary artist of the last century of the Bengal. He was born in a district of
Bangladesh, which is located at the northern part of the country. Zainul was encouraged to Art by
enchanting natural views of the place, where he grew up, dominated by a famous river. In 1933 he got
admitted in an institute to learn art and he studied there for several years. To have batter understanding
of Art, in 1951 Zainul Abedin went to London for higher training and as a learned artist Zainul used to art
in his own style. After partition he moved to Dhaka and established an institute of art, where Zainul
worked as the founding principal. For his remarkable work, Zainul received a prestigious award in 1938.
One of his extraordinary works is the series of sketches that he drew after a man-made famine. In 1970
the great artist visited some refugee camps in Syria and Jordan and drew 60-70 paintings depicting the
hardship of refugees. In 1975 Zainul Abedin set up folk museum in Sonargaon and 1982 also sent up a
gallery to house some of his works, 17 pictures of Zainul were stolen though some of the stolen pictures
were recovered later. For his contribution to art and remarkable qualities he was given an honorable
title. Zainul died due to lung cancer and decades after his death a famous newspaper published a report
admiring his works.
