Scholarship winners demonstrate
diversity of engineering projects
FATOUMATA MAIGA
The winner of the 2018 CDA
Research Award is Fatoumata Maiga.
Ms. Maiga was born and raised in
Mali, West Africa and came to Canada
to study Civil Engineering followed by
a Master’s degree in Water Resources
from the University of Ottawa.
Since childhood she has had a
fascination with civil engineering
structures and their designs. That
fascination of engineering structures
combined with a love of water and a
concern about climate change have
led to her present research area: the

87th Annual Meeting of the International Commission on
Large Dams (ICOLD) in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. This
continues Canada’s long tradition of collaboration with
other National Committees of ICOLD and participation
in the development of leading guidance for engineers and
other professionals.
Participation in ICOLD encourages the Canadian
community to continue to learn and advance the state-
of-practice related to dams, establish relationships, and
