First Line Antiretroviral Therapy Effectiveness in Adult Patients with HIV / AIDS in VCT - CST

Background

Antiretroviral has been used as inhibitors of viral replication of HIV. The effectiveness of
antiretroviral therapy can be seen from the change of bodyweight and immunological status of
the patients, namely lymphocyte count and CD4 count. HIV/AIDS adult patients in Kupang has
increased each year and the patient has been treated with antiretroviral drugs.

Objective

This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of first-line antiretroviral therapy used
by adult patients with HIV / AIDS in Kupang.

Methode

This study is a cross-sectional study on data from the medical records of adult patients with
HIV/AIDS at the VCT-CST Clinic as part of Prof. Dr. W. Z.JohanesHospital,Kupang, NTTin the
period 2010-2013.The effectiveness of some antiretroviral combinations were evaluated in terms
of body weight changes, lymphocytes count and CD4 count.
Results

HIV/AIDS new patients during 2010-2013 that is recorded is 260 patients and out of them, 62
patients having a bodyweight data. Among the 62 patients, 12 patients had the data of
lymphocyte and 50 patients have the data of CD4.
Results of univariate analysis showed 68% of patients were male and 32% were women.
Combivir+Neviralis the most used antiretroviral combination (56%). Most patients who
recieving antiretroviral therapy experienced a bodyweight gain (85%), an increased number of
lymphocytes (92%) and increase in CD4 (94%).
Results of bivariate analysis showed all kinds of antiretroviral combinations lead to the
bodyweight changes before and after treatment, with p <0.005. Patients on antiretroviral
combination include Combivir+Efavirens, Combivir+Neviral and Stavudin+Hiviral+Neviral,
showed an increase in lymphocytes. All types of antiretroviral combination also resulted in an
increase in CD4.

Conclusion

First-lineantiretroviral combination therapy is still effective for the treatment of HIV/AIDS adult
patients in Kupang, NTT.
