A FAMILY PARALITURGY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Papa: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.

Papa: On this day, we remember the Magi who, guided by the star shining in the heavens,
came to the house where Jesus rested in the arms of the Virgin Mary, His mother, and
Saint Joseph, His foster father. They were blessed as they brought their gifts to that
holy place.
All: We have seen His star in the East and have come with gifts to adore the Lord!

Papa: The star burned like a flame, pointing the way to God, the King of kings; the wise
men saw the sign and brought their gifts in homage to their great King. We ask that
we may also become like that star, ever ready to lead others to Jesus our King.
All: We have seen His star in the East and have come with gifts to adore the Lord!

Papa: As the Magi were led by that great star to the greatest source of eternal light, Christ
our Lord, we invoke and ask God’s blessings on our house, our doors, and our
thresholds, so that our home may truly be a new Bethlehem, a new Nazareth, where
peace, love, and joy reign, and where we may find and encounter the same Jesus, born
ever anew, in the hearts and faces of the people who enter and leave our premises.
All: We have seen His star in the East and have come with gifts to adore the Lord!

Papa: Let us pray.

O God, who on this day revealed Your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the
guidance of a star, grant in Your mercy that we, who know You already by faith, may
be brought to behold the beauty of Your sublime glory. Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, forever and ever.
All: Amen.

Russel: Listen to the words of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah:

Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See,
darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the Lord shines, and
over you appears His glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance.
Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and
your daughters in the arms of their nurses.

Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and over flow, for the riches of
the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans
of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing
gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord.

The Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their
treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true
God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

Mama: A proclamation from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew.

All: Glory to you, O Lord.

Mama: When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,

in the days of King Herod,
behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
"Where is the newborn king of the Jews?
We saw his star at its rising
and have come to do him homage."
When King Herod heard this,
he was greatly troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.
Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people,
He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea,
for thus it has been written through the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
since from you shall come a ruler,
who is to shepherd my people Israel."
Then Herod called the magi secretly
and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
"Go and search diligently for the child.
When you have found him, bring me word,
that I too may go and do him homage."

After their audience with the king they set out.
And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them,
until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.
They were overjoyed at seeing the star,
and on entering the house
they saw the child with Mary his mother.
They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
Then they opened their treasures
and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they departed for their country by another way.

The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ!

Leader: Many shall come from Sheba, alleluia, alleluia!

All: bearing gold and frankincense, alleluia, alleluia!
Leader: O Lord, hear my prayer.
All: And let my cry come unto you.

Papa: Let us pray.

Bless, O Lord God, this creature, chalk, and let it be a help to mankind. Grant that
those who will use it with faith in your most holy name, and with it inscribe on the
doors of their homes the names of your saints, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, may
through their merits and intercession enjoy health in body and protection of soul;
through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

Papa: Let us pray.

O Lord, Almighty God, bless this house that it may become a shelter of health,
chastity, self-conquest, humility, goodness, mildness, obedience to the
commandments, and thanksgiving to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Upon this
house and those who dwell herein may Your blessing remain forever, through Christ
our Lord.
All: Amen.

The father of the family and all other family members proceed to the front door. While all look on, the father
reads the corresponding words as the kings inscribe their initials onto the lintel. (The initials CMB also stand
for Christus mansionem benedicat: May Christ bless this house.)
Final inscription on lintel should read: 2 0 + C + M + B + 1 7:
The three wise men, Caspar, C
Melchior, M
and Balthasar B
followed the star of God’s Son who became man two thousand [inscribe the ‘2 0’ on left] 20
seventeen years ago. [inscribe ‘1 6’ on right] 1 6
May Christ bless our dwelling, [places + after ‘2 0’] +
and remain with us throughout the new year, [ + after ‘C’] +
and grant that our comings and goings [ + after ‘M’] +
will be in search of truth. [ + after ‘B’] +
