Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

“Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team

of people.”

-Steve Jobs

In 1940’s , San Pablo City struggled after suffering from different occupations – a

colony of United States until the regime of Japanese imperial army. Everything was

destroyed from homes, buildings, infrastructures and farmlands. The largest manufacturer

and exporter of coconut product in Southeast Asia was rebuilt its San Pablo processing

plant in 1947 named Franklin Baker Corporation. In 1992, farmers and agricultural

workers benefited the most on concreting the city’s 231-kilometer road network as it

made much easier for them to transport their products.

According to Philippine Daily Inquirer (2015), the profitability of coconut

production affected the last 20th and 21st century because of vital shifts and changes in

world trade. The San Pableños’ ingenuity and creativity found ways to make the most out

of the tree of life, all possible consumer based products, coco-based soap and beauty-

enhancing products and many more kept in the industry alive.

As an ABM Student, this study about the history of business establishments in

San Pablo is a big help. The study would provide complete knowledge about possible

businesses that could be established.

This study will help San Pableños to determine the popular business forms here in

city. Furthermore, their knowledge on how the business forms in San Pablo City change.

Background of the Study

The Government of San Pablo City provided the documents about the businesses

to the researchers. As written in the documents, businesses in San Pablo started in 1940’s

where the owners paid for corresponding fees for their operations. The first business that

applied for Mayor’s permit is a dry food business in the market of the city.

At present, there are so many establishments in San Pablo City. Before they can

operate the business they will ask for a Mayor’s Permit and Business Permit which

includes the tax that they would pay annually.

The business establishments in San Pablo City have different ways on getting

permits then and now. But it did not hinder the continuous appearance of businesses in

the city.

Theoretical Framework

Drucker’s Theory of the Business and Organizations: Challenging Business

Assumptions is the guiding framework of this study. Pat Dali and James S. Walsh (2009)

were the proponents of this theory. It provides new knowledge about the practical

potential of one of Drucker’s seminal published articles in an area largely untouched by

business or management research. It illustrates how research employing Drucker’s

“theory of the business” concept in especially growth-oriented businesses.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents concepts gleaned from literature and previous studies of

different researches which are essential and relevant to the study. The researcher look for

a number of foreign and local studies and some related literature that have either direct or

indirect bearing to the study.

Related Literature

Business Forms

Business forms is a term used in determining the number of owners the business

have. It has four types such as sole-proprietorship, partnership, corporation and

cooperative.

The book entitled “ Partnership and Corporation” written by Renato R. Pasimio

on 2004 tackles about two types of business forms which are partnership and corporation.

Based on this book partnership is a simple concept during the olden times was not

considered as entity, but rather a mere business arrangement for the convenience of the

parties concerned in carrying on their business enterprises. While they found out that

corporation is the most appropriate organization to meet present business demands and

exigencies of the business enterprise.

Cooperatives Association is a non-profit enterprise, owned and democratically

controlled on a mutual basis by the member who participates in the savings generated by

the cooperatives according to the book entitled “The Management of Organization”.

(Leveriza, 2000)

According to the book “An Introduction to Business and Management” of Patricia

E. Moody a management consultant, sole proprietorship is a business organization whose

capital requirement is generated by one individual licensed to operate a business

according to the rules and regulations prescribed by Department of Trades and Industry

(DTI). Sole proprietorship may engaged in a service industry, merchandising business

and manufacturing operations.

Sole Proprietorship has its owns disadvantages as stated in a news article of “Pet

Product News”. The article explain that there are unlimited personal liabilities for all

debts against the business and both of your personal assets and in your business are at

risk in the event of the legal trouble. (Lynott , 2018)

Accountancy, Business and Management Strand

Accountancy, Business and Management is a strand in senior high school that

offers knowledge on the students about accounting and business management. It enhance

the skills of the students’ potential in the business world.

An article from Enderun (2005) define ABM strand curriculum opens the avenues

for the students to gain a more nuanced appreciation of the intrinsic elements that make

up the world of accounting and business management courses in the Philippines without

having to dive deeper into the specialized complexities of mathematical fields such as

algebra, geometry, trigonometry and others.

SAN JOSE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ABM

Historical Analysis of Business Establishments in San Pablo City
PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1
8
Second Semester, S. Y. 2018-2019

The Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand would focus on the

basic concepts of financial management, business management, corporate operations, and

all things that are accounted for. ABM can also lead you to career on management and

accounting which could be sales manager, human resources, marketing director, project

officer, bookkeeper, accounting clerk, internal auditor and a lot more. (Edukasyon, 2019)

Nicholas Sparks (2017) cited in his article entitled “Our Ticket to the Corporate

World” that Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand offers subjects which

will help students broaden their knowledge about what is ABM and open their minds into

the reality of the business.

Each student in Senior High School can choose among three tracks: Academic;

Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts. The Academic track includes three

strands: Accountancy, Business Management (ABM); Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS); and Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM). Students

undergo immersion, which may Include earn-while-you-learn opportunities, to provide

them relevant exposure and actual experience in their chosen track. (Official Gazette,

2012).

Economic Growth

Economic growth is an increase in the capacity of an economy to produce goods

and services, compared from one period of time to another.

The management and finance professor Feliciano R. Fajardo published a book

entitled “Economics” that stated that all countries are experiencing economic problems,

SAN JOSE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ABM

Historical Analysis of Business Establishments in San Pablo City

Second Semester, S. Y. 2018-2019

including the richest countries. Inflation and unemployment are the problems experienced

by the countries that have economic downfall instead of economic growth.

Local road investment is the key to have economic growth because it is where the

delivering process of any products starts according to the book entitled “Investing in

Local Roads for Economic Growth. It defines economic growth as the enhancement of a

country in all aspects like education, medicine and infrastructures. (Llanto, 2011)

Stephen C. Smith (2010) mentioned on his book “Economic Development: Tenth

Edition” that economic growth is the product of economic development. The products of

economic growth are measured through the GNP. It can produce more goods and services

because they have enough money, modern machines and technologies plus favorable

attitudes, values and institutions.

In the article Economic Growth Factors it is said that economic growth is

measured by increase in a country’s total output or real Gross Domestic Profit (GDP) or

Gross National Product (GNP). It doesn’t occur in isolation. Events in one country and

region can have a significant effect on growth prospects in another. (Agarwal, 2017)

Historical Analysis

Historical Analysis is a method of examination of evidence in coming to an

understanding of the past. Documents and records from reliable sources are needed in this

study as the evidence.

Victor Jupp (2006) define historical analysis as a method that seeks to make sense

of the past through the disciplined and systematic of the traces it leaves behind in his

book “SAGE Dictionary of Social Research Methods”. He also mentioned that it is

SAN JOSE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ABM

commonly used in social research as an introductory strategy for establishing a context or

background against which a substantive contemporary study may be set.

History matters to decision-makers as well as analysts. The question of

when to take history into account and when to ignore it and ‘take a chance’ is the essence

of managerial judgment. ( Buckley, 2002).

San Pablo City

San Pablo City is a place that is famous for its Seven lakes named Sampaloc,

Bunot, Yambo, Pandin, Calibato, Muhikap and Palakpakin. In this city of Laguna, they

celebrate Coco Festival as their feast.

The Philippine Cities (2007) claimed that San Pablo City was a part of Sampaloc

when the Spaniards came around 1571 under the troops of captain Juan De Salcedo.

Sampaloc was converted into Parish and became a municipality in 1647 and was renamed

“San Pablo De Los Montes”. As the time past by it was named “San Pablo City”.

In Laguna , a town called San Pablo is found and this is another area teeming with

spots that every tourist will enjoy. Dubbed as the City of Seven Lakes , San Pablo is a

place dotted with rich natural resources , cultural heritage, fun festivities, historical

landmark and of course, delicious cuisine. An encounter with these amazing natural

wonders will surely entice visitors to keep coming back, especially in the captivating

Sampalok Lake.( Adajar, 2015)

Related Studies

Business Forms

The study “Master Thesis Emerging Business Forms and Corporate Social

Responsibility” of Asmira Vranjkovina (2014) stated that existing business forms have

been subject to several social and economic influences which have forced legislators and

experts to create other business types. Emerging forms as limited liability companies and

the Dutch Flex-B.V. have their own advantages and drawbacks, but can be considered as

a step forward due to the flexibility and more simplified requirements they bring with.

As stated in the study entitled “Forms of Business Organization”, sole

proprietorships are not ideal for high-risk businesses because they put your personal

assets at risk. If you are taking on significant amounts of debt to start your business, if

you've gotten into trouble with personal debt in the past or if your business involves an

activity for which you might potentially be sued, then you should choose a legal structure

that will better protect your personal assets.(Investopedia)

Sole trader businesses are the easiest to set up because there is no complex

paperwork according to the study “Legal forms of Business”. The business and the owner

are the same person in law. The sole trader does not have limited liability which means

that they are responsible for all the debts of the business. ( Dontigney, 2018)

Cielo G. Mirasol (2004) concluded on his study “Types of Business Ornizations”

that partnership agreement should specify who the partners are, what their roles and

responsibilities are, and the most importantly spell out how the profits will be divided

SAN JOSE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ABM

between or among the partners.he also recognized the different types of partnership, such

as general partnership, limited partnership, and limited liability partnership.

Accountancy, Business and Management Strand

As the result in the study of Clavel, Doctora, Estorque, Lamis and Valtoribio

(2017), the advantage of the business course / ABM strand is to expand your mind in

business skills like making a business in the future. Also the disadvantage of the business

courses/ABM strand is lack of expenses such as tuition and the time management of the

school.

Most of the ABM students specifically six out of eight students cited their needs

as their main priority to save based on the findings of ABM students that have difficulties

in saving for their wants. In spending and saving, specifically both self-satisfaction and

academic matters is the main focus of ABM students. Least number of ABM students

who doesn’t have a specific reason to spend and save considers emergency purposes as

their priority. (Longa, et al. , 2017)

The ABM track is for those who planned on taking up Economics, Business

Administration, Accountancy and Marketing in college as stated in the study of Ocbena

Chille (2016) entitled “Reasons on Choosing Accountancy, Business and Management”.

It is also perfect for those inclined in mathematics and for those persons who want to

venture into the world of Business, Marketing and Enterprise.

Peering into the specialized subjects, these are essentials for ABM students as

stated in the study “The Relationship between Academic performance in Specialized

subjects and level of Confidence in Pursuing ABM-related courses of Grade 11

Students”. It can deeply boost the students preparation and familiarity to their course.

Business Mathematics, Organization Management, Fundamentals of Marketing, and

Principles of Accounting are those subjects crucial for the ABM student’s course. (May,

2019)

Economic Growth

Through the study entitled Master Thesis: The Effect of education on economic

growth (2012), Alfredo Alarcon Yanez, exposed the theoretical reasons of the way a

higher level of average education could make a country grow faster, but the empirical

results do not always go in the same direction. The literature on the effect of education on

economic growth is far from achieving a definitive conclusion.

Using two-step system-GMM on a panel data of 105 economies over the period

1987-2016, the students from the University of the Philippines(UP) Diliman present

formal statistical evidence that federalism is a strong predictor of greater income

inequality in developing economies. It is also a strong predictor of higher poverty

incidence and poverty severity on average for all countries. Federalism does not predict

lower poverty incidence and severity in developing countries. Thus for a developing

economy such as the Philippines, federalism appears to be a leap from the frying pan into

the fire of even greater income inequality and poverty incidence. ( Ducanes, 2018)

In the study of Rosemary Nyambura Waithaka, the neoclassical model for

economic growth focuses on the capital/labor ratio so as to explain what is going on in

the economy. An increase in this ratio raises the output per worker which raises the

national output thus increasing the standard of living. One of the ways to change this ratio

SAN JOSE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL – SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ABM

Second Semester, S. Y. 2018-2019

in an economy that is not producing enough is through investment into the economy such

that the capital/labor ratio is increased; this is referred to as capital deepening.

As cited in the study entitled “Infrastructure and Economic Growth” by Stephan

Fretz (2004), infrastructure is considered to be a core ingredient to economic growth.

However, empirical evidence on the effects of new infrastructure on economic outcome

variables as well as on the determinants of infrastructure provision is still relatively

scarce. This dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the role infrastructure

plays in the economy with a collection of empirical studies from mature economies.

Historical Analysis

History is unquestionably a valid way of viewing reality, that is the present can be

intelligible only with a knowledge of the past. Historical knowledge of the past can

illumine our understanding of the present. Conversely, knowledge of the present

increases our understanding of the past. The past can be understood only through an

awareness of the realities.( Bauzon, 1976)

The study Local History of Lance G. Abalos (2014) provided the foundation and

the substance of true national history. It is more than the study of towns, provinces and

regions of the Philippines and the people who live there. It proved us with the

documentation and analysis of the broad processes which are important to the life of the

people. Local history enriches our understanding of our national history.

Historical research methods and approaches can improve understanding of the

most appropriate techniques to confront data and test theories in “Internationalization

Research”. A critical analysis of all “texts” (sources), time series analyses, comparative

15
Second Semester, S. Y. 2018-2019

methods across time periods and space, counterfactual analysis and the examination of

outliers are shown to have the potential to improve research practices.( Buckley, 2016)

Historical methods of research are the process of systematically examining an

account of what has happened in the past. It is not facts and dates or even a description of

past events. The dynamic account of past events that involves an interpretation attempt to

recapture the nuances, personalities, and the ideas that events. One of the goals of

historical research is to communicating of past events. ( Kumar, 2005)

San Pablo City

There is a fairly sufficient water supply in San Pablo as shown by the presence of

several springs and other surface water bodies in the city and its geology San Pablo’s

main concern would be the consequences of anthropogenic activities to the quality of its

water resources. (Perez, et al., 2004)

Olive Domingo (2013) concluded on his study “Seven Lakes of San Pablo City: A

Major Role Player in Boosting the Local Tourism in Laguna” that seven lakes have great

potentials that made most of the local tourist attracted with the place. He also said that

San Pablo City has the highest number of tourist within the province of Laguna.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes briefly the methodology employed in the conduct of the

study. It presents the research design, population of the study, research instruments,

research procedure and data analysis.

Research Design

The researchers use qualitative research. It is multi-method in focus, involving an

interpretive, naturalistic approach to its matter. This means that qualitative researchers

study things in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of, or interpret,

phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them. (Lincoln, 1994).

This study uses thematic research design. It is a foundational method of analysis

that needed to be defined and described to solidify its place in qualitative research. It also

allows for rich, detailed and complex description of the data. (Braun and Clark, 2006).

Specifically, historical analysis was used to research for the in-depth knowledge about the

history of the Business establishment in San Pablo City. According to Student

Achievement Guarantee in Education (SAGE) research methods, historical analysis is a

method of examination of evidence in coming to an understanding of the past.

Population of the Study

One of the important factors of this research to be fulfilled is interviewing six (6)

businessmen who owns businesses in San Pablo City for a long period of time. These

Second Semester, S. Y. 2018-2019

businessmen are chosen to be the participants of the research for the researchers to know

the changes on establishments in San Pablo City.

Research Instruments

In this study the main instrument used is face-to-face interview and structured

interview in order to gather data and information about the establishments in San Pablo

City. This type of interview is an appropriate tool for the participants to express what they

know for the cooperation of the persons, necessities were given to them. The researchers

record answers by the use of writing and audio recorder. The recorded answers are used

to know the participants answers and thoughts about the questions asked.

Research Procedure

The research is first done by finding three (3) panelists to help the researchers do

the study. A Title Defense was conducted by the researchers to a better research title. The

study was done after doing the chapters of the study. First chapter was finished by stating

the problem and supporting it by facts. Second chapter was done by looking for related

literatures and studies to support our research.

Third chapter was done by discussing the methods throughout the research.

Before the researchers do the fourth chapter, a letter was given to interviewees to ask

permission for them to answer the questions. Different answers were used by the

researchers and analyzed using coding. The fifth chapter was finished through summing

up the data gathered, giving conclusions and telling recommendation for a better study.

built.

It affects the profit of vendors in the city market. Because the people were going

there instead in the city market. The number of businesses also increased. At present the

businesses here in the city were increasing also the economic growth became higher.

Recommendation

This research could possibly inspire further research to provide valuable

knowledge about the Historical Analysis if Business Establishments in San Pablo City.

However, the result of this research have several recommendation for the following:

1. Government of San Pablo City should know the importance of businesses to

the economic growth of the city.

2. Residents should consider where they will buy their needs.

3. Businessmen would have knowledge to have a successful business.

4. Students must determine the difference of the businesses then and now.

Researchers (Group 1): What are the facts about business forms?

P1: An example of business forms is Sole Proprietorship. It is a form of business where

only one person owns it and it’s easier to build a business like that.

P2: It is based on the number of owners the business had. Sole Proprietorship is one of its

form.

P3: Partnership is a form of business where there are two or more owners. It is much

easier to be in a partnership because there’s someone who can help you to run a business.
