A Beautiful Mind

Q1

The first indication in the film that John was ill mentally was when he was running on

college campus and no one was chasing him. I believe the makers of the film allowed viewers to

be fooled into believing John’s delusional were real in order for them to understand what really

goes on in schizophrenic patients.

Q2

John became aware he is mentally ill when he told his wife that that she never ages

though he was referring to Marcee. It is at this point he accepts Marcee is part of a hallucination.

His wife, Alice on the other hand became aware when he was admitted to the psychiatric facility

where Dr. Rosen informs her he has Schizophrenia. John’s friend learns of his condition when

they notice that he has some antisocial behavior, always distant and a little bit strange.

Q3

John had paranoid schizophrenia, a condition where people have false beliefs or

delusions that some other individual are plotting something against them.

Q4

It was necessary to hospitalize John because he turning violent and was a threat to others.

Q5
2

It is not possible that John could continue living with these hallucinations and still be able

to distinguish between what is not real and what is real. The reason why this is so is particularly

because, he choose not to stick with his medication.

Q6

This impact that this film has on the public opinion on mentally ill people in general is

that their conditions affects their very ability to clearly think, make decisions, relate to others and

manage feelings.

Q7

I found this film to be both entertaining and enlightening. Russell Crowe in the film

produced possibly his best performance which turned out to be very convincing as far I am

concerned.
