Big Idea that drives Lesson/Unit:


Superheroes have many different tasks and abilities, but are not always just some made up character. These lesson plans
revolve around building themselves into a superhero. By building themselves into a superhero, students get the opportunity to make
new self-discoveries, confidences, independence, and self-esteem while building on various art mediums exploring drawing, painting,
color theory, photography, and filmography.
Key concepts about Big Idea:
● Superheroes can be any and everyone
● The creation of a superhero utilizes multiple artistic medias
● Superheroes have personalities, backgrounds, and identities that make them who they are
● Symbols are a representation of a person, place, thing ​(superhero in this case)

● Illustration: ​An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process, designed for
integration in published media, such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and
films

● Drawing: thumbnail sketches ​(​a small drawing on paper used to explore multiple ideas quickly.​)​, hatching ​(​shading effects
by drawing closely spaced parallel lines​)​, cross hatching ​(lines crossing each other in different directions to create tonal
value)​, and stippling ​(a series of dots to create an image and tonal value)

Procedures:
● DISCUSSION: (5 minutes)
○ Schedule
■ First we will discuss what it takes to be a superhero
■ Next we will do a quick drawing technique demo
■ Then in your sketchbooks you will create yourself as a superhero
○ Who is/can be a superhero? What characteristics do superheroes have? What does a superhero look like?
○ Key Concepts
■ Superheroes can be any and everyone
■ Creating a superhero uses multiple art forms
■ Superheroes have personalities, backgrounds, and identities that make them who they are

● DEMONSTRATIONS: (5 minutes)
○ These are the techniques we will be using on this projects
■ Show examples of hatching, cross hatching, and stippling
● DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (25 minutes)
○ In your sketchbooks brainstorm what your superhero will be;
■ If you were a superhero who would you be? What would you stand for? What would you fight against?
● Ex. iron man is clean energy, batman fights thieves and bullies,
○ Utilizing one or more of the techniques discussed design your superhero symbol (batman’s bat, superman’s s,
captain america’s shield, the incredibles i, etc.)
○ Overall Goal(s) for the day:
■ Brainstorm/come up with a superhero character
■ Create 9 thumbnail sketches of an emblem/symbol for that character
■ If finished: brainstorm a superhero pose that YOU can do for pictures next week!
○ Time reminders at (10 minutes & 5 minutes)
○ While students are working: walk around, help those who need it, talk with students about their work
● CLEAN UP: (2 minutes)

○ Finishing thoughts: likes/dislikes about drawing materials? Why or why not? Did you learn anything new about
drawing/illustration?
○ “We will be using this superhero throughout the next 7 weeks…. It may change over time… that’s ok! Our next
project will be a photography project taking pictures of your “superhero pose” which we will then use drawing and
painting to transform them into a cover for your comic. After that we will be doing public service announcements
about how everyone else can be a superhero based off of a certain idea”
