Family involvement, local guidance help Melchers
“breathe new life” into their remodeled home

When making the decision
to purchase a home, there are
always lots of things to consid-
er. For Jeff and Sara Melcher
of rural Waukon it was no dif-
ferent. When they found a nice
home that met their needs, they
began thinking about the things
they would like to change to
make it more ideal for their sit-
uation.
Sara noted that when they
had been looking at the house,
they asked Pat Liddiard to
come with them so they could
get a better idea of what they
would and wouldn’t be able to
do as far as taking out walls
and changes like that. Liddiard
Builders would end up complet-
ing the construction work on
the main floor and the upstairs
of their house.
The Melchers purchased
their home in August of 2017

“Doing our own demolition
made it more personal and
worthwhile,” Sara said.
The home is a stick built
house, built in 1937. During
the demolition process, the
Melchers found a signed piece
of lumber from the builder, Joel
Ellefson. Ellefson had also not-
ed that on December 1, 1937
he was 57 years old, there
was four inches of snow on the
ground and the temperature
was 18 degrees.
The project was a complete
remodel. “We tore everything
down to the studs,” Jeff ex-

After 50 years on the farm,
Ruds easily transition to new home in town

They’ve never looked back.
That’s what Waukon’s Dar-
ryl and Lorraine Rud had to
say about their transition from
a farmhouse in Dorchester to a
new ranch-style home in Wau-
kon.
The Ruds lived on their farm
northwest of Dorchester for
50 years, raising two children
(Paul of Draper, UT and Twila
Henning of Burnsville, MN) in
addition to running beef and
hog operations. In addition to
farming, Darryl has worked off
the farm driving school bus for
almost 40 years - for Dorches-
ter Elementary School, then
Spring Grove and now Waukon
- and Lorraine worked at Hard-
ees in Waukon.
“A couple of years ago, I got
injured and decided maybe it
was time to move off the farm,”
remembered Darryl.
The couple started shopping
for existing real estate in town,
but couldn’t find a home that
was exactly right for them. “We
looked at several, but every
one we looked at, we thought
we’d have to do a little of this
and a little of that. We figured
by the time we would remodel,
we probably could just as well
buy new,” said Darryl.
Lorraine said at their age,
they knew they wanted a ranch
style home, so they started
looking at lots and floor plans.
In the fall of 2017, they bought
a lot on Second Avenue SW in
Waukon, and the rest is history.
They auctioned their farm and
equipment, and quickly settled
into the idea of moving to town.
They started digging in April of Darryl and Lorraine Rud, formerly of rural Dorchester, transitioned from their life on the family farm
to this new home on Second Street SW in Waukon this past year. The couple chose a ranch style

During the remodel, the
Melchers were able to live
off-site, and were also able to
come and clean up in the eve-
nings to help the contractors
along. Jeff and Sara acted as
the general contractors of their
own project, making calls and
lining up their subcontractors.
The entire project took seven
months. Project materials were
purchased through Ashbacher
Building Supply, and Larry Ash-
bacher also helped with design
work and measurements.
The Melchers decided to
enlarge the kitchen area. They
added a load-bearing beam
and took out a wall and the ex-
isting chimney in order to do
so. There is plenty of counter
space and they also put in an
undermount sink. Sara noted
that the sink doesn’t have a lip,
so it is very convenient to just
wipe any messes on the count-
er right into the sink. Part of the remodeling process for the Melcher home in rural Waukon was to open the floor plan. This included removing interior
walls and adding a support beam to help create this welcoming area pictured above where the family spends a majority of its time.

which were purchased through

nets are oak and extend all the
way to the ceiling and are fin-
ished with crown molding. They
also feature under-cabinet
lighting. The floor in the kitch-
en was redone in ash and the
Melchers purchased new appli-
ances from Jim’s Appliance.
In the dining area and living
room, the flooring is the original
quarter-sawn oak. Shawn Lep-
pert of Silver Creek Hardwood
Floors installed their new floor-
ing, as well as restoring and
refinishing the existing hard-
wood floors. With the removal
of some of the walls and duct
work, there were some areas
of the floor that needed to be
patched as well.

was done in hickory instead of
oak, to give a little bit of a differ-
ent look.

the upstairs part of the home,
just some painting, refinishing
the floors and some electrical
work. The entire home was re-
wired and exterior walls were
spray foamed by Brinks Spray
Foam, and there is all new
plumbing and duct work. Dave
Cota was the electrician for the
project and Kurth Plumbing and
Heating completed the duct
work and plumbing.
The furnace is the existing
furnace. The home was previ-
ously heated by several sourc-
es, including wood, but the
Melchers decided they wanted
to go with LP heat. They also
added central air to the home,
which was installed by B&K
Plumbing & Heating. New over-
head doors were added to the
garage and another outbuild-
ing, and those were installed
by Tri-State Doors.
The original plan was to
leave the finished basement as
Sommer Pumper LLC.

be replaced, which meant jack-
hammering part of the base-
ment bathroom floor out. With

decided to redesign the exist-
ing bathroom and office. Blake
Excavating helped with the new
septic system and Kelly Con-
crete poured the cement for the
project.
Jim Sess and Rylan Retal-
lick did the construction in the
basement, which consisted of
new drywall, new ceilings and
flooring. The Melchers had a
wall put up in the basement to
separate the utility room, sec-
ond laundry and storage area
from the other two rooms down
there. They also added a show-
er to the basement bathroom.

The entire process went pret-

but one thing Jeff and Sara ad-
vised for anyone considering a
remodeling project is to be flex-
ible. They noted that decisions
have to sometimes be made
very quickly, even when it can
be hard to imagine the end
result. They also advised that
situations do arise from time to
time and the contractors may
have to put your project aside
to go and help someone else,
and issues may crop up during
the remodel that will cause it to
go over the originally intended
budget.
The Melchers also tried to
shop locally as much as pos-
sible during their project. “We
have a lot of talented local peo-
ple,” Sara noted. Being able to

du Chien, WI, just to get addi-
tional ideas about their options.
“We toured some homes
in Prairie du Chien, which is
where we got the idea for our
four-season room,” said Darryl.
The four-season room, which
was not in the original floor
plan, contains large windows
on all three sides and is located
on the south side of the house.
The couple spends a lot of their
time there, as it affords them a
great view of the outdoors.

“We really like it,” said Darryl.

SETTLING IN
The Ruds said they love
their new location, right across
the street from the park, where
they like to walk when they’re
not doing laps at the Waukon
Wellness Center.
“We also have four grandkids
who are excited that we have
the swimming pool and every-
thing right there,” said Lorraine.
Darryl said both he and Lor-
raine have acclimated to life in
town more quickly than they
thought they would, and they
are extremely happy with how
things worked out.
“We both love it,” added Lor-
raine.

what he thought he would like.
“I knew he’d pick out the
quality he would want in his
own home,” Werner said.
As with most construction
projects, there were some
snags along the way. The win-
dows on the back side of the
house had to be moved a few
inches one way to better work
around the space needed for
the refrigerator. As a result,
he could not put in the stone
fireplace he wanted because
the space was too narrow. He
put in a wall-mounted electric
fireplace instead, which he in-
stalled himself.
He also ended up making
changes as the project pro-
gressed to help keep the main

the crew remove a small wall
and they re-created the stair-
well with a turn so that they
didn’t need the wall.
When the concrete for the
basement floor was poured,
they added a deep red color so
additional flooring downstairs
was not necessary.
All of the light fixtures in the
house feature LED light diodes
which are extremely long-last-
ing and have low energy con-
sumption. “There isn’t a light
bulb in the place,” he said.
The new house has LP heat-
ing featuring a UV light which
purifies the air and can prevent
mildew. He also went with the
recommendation of an on-de-
mand hot water heater. Werner
said he was able to get rebates
from the LP company for the
high-efficiency appliances.
He lined the closet with ce-
dar and did much of the finish

When it came to buying fur-
niture he went to a local store,
found what he liked and mea-
sured it. He then went home
and checked the measure-
ments to see if the pieces
would fit where he wanted them
to. He chose furniture that has
a cabin look.
He adds, “I’m a firm believer
in buying local, even if you end
up paying a bit more. The bet-
ter service is worth it.”
There is a screened-in porch
on one side of the house and a
deck on another. The screened-
in porch even has the underside
of the deck boards screened so
that insects will have a much
harder time getting in. Werner
says he may someday turn
the screened-in porch into a
three-seasons room.

the location of his home and his
3.75 acre parcel.
One of his friends came to
visit and liked the place so
much he bought the empty lot
next door. Werner says he en-
joyed overseeing the building
of his own house, so he is help-
ing out his friends by oversee-
ing their home building project
as well.

Growing your own cut flowers

Keep your flower vases filled
all summer long with beauti-
ful blossoms picked right from
your own garden and contain-
ers. Growing seeds, plants and
tender bulbs that can double
as cut flowers makes it easy to
create casual, fresh-cut bou-
quets for your dinner table,
guest room or to share with
family and friends.
For early spring flowers,
look to spring-blooming bulbs
like tulips and daffodils, and
cool weather annuals like
pansies and snapdragons.
Clipping branches from trees
and shrubs such as forsythia,
quince and daphne is another
good way to bring spring into
