HISTORY OF URBAN GOVERNANCE IN INDIA
1947
PRE-INDEPENDENCE
Initiated by the British with
the establishment of
Chennai Municipal
Corporation in 1688. Later
expended to Kolkata and
Mumbai.
1990
POST-INDEPENDENCE RECENT
TILL 1990 DEVELOPMENTS
No major initiatives for improving 74th CAA (1992) and several urban
the status of local bodies – gradual reforms
erosion in the role of local bodies in RTI Act, 2005
civic management, irregular Shift towards e-Governance
