Workshop Machine Elements:
structure and important aspects
The workshop Machine Elements from approx. 15:00h to 18:00h
provides the best opportunity to prepare for exam.
University of Siegen – Dept. 11 – MVP – Prof. Dr. C. Friedrich – www.uni-siegen.de

The workshop refers to the problem field of presented exercises; it is an

asissted free working on a Machine Element optimization problem.
Each student will work in a team of 2…4 fellow students; a written
solution of the team will be handed to MVP at the end of each day
– do not forget your names.
The solutions will be evaluated; it will contribute 30% at maximum, to the
grading of the final examination.

Machine Elements: relevance and challenge, part 1

Machine Elements are the fundamental

important components of every

engineering design, which means that

they are really wide spreaded.
Machine Elements are large-scale
production components, therefore, they
have a significant economic
relevance.
Machine Elements are always highly
stressed. So they are perfect for
explaining the basic concepts of
dimensioning.
Machine Elements bring together all
sub-disciplines of mechanical
engineering; most important is the
interaction of geometry, material,
surface and manufacturing.

Machine Elements: relevance and challenge, part 2

Machine Elements are up-to-date at

any time, today, in future and in the

past. Early mentions in history point to

approx. 2000 B.C.
Machine Elements are continuously
developed over time by always using
the latest state-of-the-art.
Machine Elements are responsible
for efficiency and reliability of
machines, apparatuses and plants.
Machine Elements permit -
via standardization - an economic
series production and an easy design
procedure.

The future of machine elements

Increased efficiency for smaller

machines by an interaction of

geometry, material, surface and

manufacturing.
Optimized materials for lower weight
or/and high stiffness.
Easier / integrated production
processes with increased tolerances at
a low price.
Integrated additional features for
multiple use, e.g. easier assembly.
Mechatronic functions for higher
performance, comfortable use and
high safety.
Better layout for reliable dimensioning
and short product development time.

Conversion from degree (°) to radian (rad)

The radian indicates the arc

or 360 degrees; this means:

to radius r = 1.

The radian is 1
The formula for the conversion from if the arc length is
degree (°) to radian (rad) is as follows: equal to the radius.
π
α (rad) = α (°) ⋅ The radian is measured
180° in the dimensionless SI-unit
b=r
radian.
