N479 Leadership Management Shadowing Activity Form

Your Name: Shane Pendleton Date of Activity: 3/13/19 Faculty name: Linda Perez

Who did you shadow (add their credentials too)

Joshua Wright, RN, Nurse Manager

Role of this leader and where do they practice? (Be specific)

Joshua is a nurse manager at the CVICU at Banner University Medical Center. He has several
roles and duties in relation to his position as a manager, but I followed him on a day when he was
the charge nurse. I observed him creating patient assignments, managing transfers, and attending
a bed meeting. I followed him for 8 hours.

Discuss the benefit and value of this experience to you (Be specific).

I learned quite a bit about the role of a charge nurse from this experience. I had always been
aware of the basic duties of a charge nurse, but I had never spent a shift with one. Unfortunately,
Josh was in ratio on the shift that I followed him, so we were busy doing patient care on top of
doing charge nurse responsibilities. I didn’t mind doing patient care as well because I still
appreciate opportunities to practice patient care; however, it made the shift very similar to a
normal shift with my preceptor. I did think it was useful for me to learn how a charge nurse
creates patient assignments and I really liked learning about the management hierarchy. Having
had this experience will definitely change my perspective of charge nurses and the work that they
do.

Would you recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future; why or why not?
(Describe why or why not)

I would recommend this shadowing experience to other students who are curious about the
charge role or are interested in being a charge nurse themselves. If not, I think that following a
clinical supervisor or another position that is further separated from the normal clinical setting
would provide a more interesting and diverse experience. I didn’t think it was a boring
experience, but it wasn’t very different from a normal clinical experience for me. This might
have been due to the fact that I was on night shifts and not days.
