ENGG 481
Technology and Society
An interpretive course on the interrelationship between technology and society. The first part of the
course surveys significant historical developments within disciplinary areas such as energy,
materials, production processes, structures, transport, communications, and computation.
Sequence within each area: discovery, development, application, impact, future. Social and
economic consequences are also considered. The latter part of the course explores contemporary
problems of society and technology.

2. Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
1 Perform a critical analysis of the impact of engineering solutions in a global context;
2 Form opinions on how technology contributes to changes in society and vice versa;

a) Conversion from a score out of 100 to a letter grade will be done using the conversion chart
shown below. This grading scale can only be changed during the term if the grades will not be
lowered.
b) Students who request accommodation for a missed test or assignment must submit supporting
documentation (as described in Section N.1 of the University of Calgary Calendar) to Adrianne
Hrynyszyn (Undergraduate Program Administrator, MEB 505). This documentation must be
submitted within two (2) business days of the missed coursework in order to be eligible for

c) A student who feels that a piece of graded term work (term paper, essay, test, etc.) has been

immediately take the matter to the head of the department offering the course (Dr. Robert Brennan,

In the event of an alarm sounding, all classrooms and labs must be evacuated immediately.

Assembly Points have been identified across campus. These areas have been selected as they are
large enough to hold a significant number of people and will provide an evacuated population
