Impact of Lady Bird Lake Pollution

Have you ever walked along a lake and saw surface trash on the water, and realized that

this goes in your drinking water, as well as the fish you eat. The pollution in Lady Bird Lake

impacts the environment, the citizens, and their entertainment.

We usually think mainly about ourselves, and we don’t see in the inside of things like the

organisms living in the lake. We throw trash on the ground and don’t realize who and what is

being affected by it. Organisms are dying in the lake because of the pollution. “Bivalves… are filter

feeders and are often seen as very pollution sensitive species.” Organisms are a part of our

environment which affects us in ways that we do not even realize.

Tourists and citizens come to visit Lady Bird Lake and sometimes see trash along the

lake, but they don’t see the amount of trash near people’s houses, downstream and upstream.

Austin’s “crown jewel”, Lady Bird Lake, needs to be clean for the sake of the present and future of

Austin citizens.

Recreational activities are really important for human entertainment, such as swimming.

After a hot day in Austin, you would love to go for a swim with your family and pets, because of

pollution it is illegal to swim in the water of Lady Bird Lake. Since entertainment and exercise are

important for the human body, we need to clean up the surface trash, which causes bacterial

pollution in the water.

 Through this information, we know that we need to fix the pollution in Lady Bird Lake that

impacts the environment, the citizens, and their entertainment. The organisms are being affected

by us. We are being affected by us. Our entertainment is being affected by us. We need to fix this

problem of surface trash to be able to live in the future.
