Summary

We discussed the last 1/3 of the novel. We were emotional after reading the end of the book
because it ended with a powerful quote from Esperanza. We all agreed that she has shown tremendous
growth as a person since moving to California. Lindsey asked us about the pinata in the story and how it
was significant. Esperanza bought one to give to her mother who was in the hospital but ended up giving
it to children in need. This showed a development of her character. We made predictions about what
could happen to Isabel in the story. We came across the word regal in the story and researched what it
meant. We then discussed how Esperanza was using it to describe her mother. We talked about the
setting and how it changed in this part of the novel. For example, people were worried about losing their
jobs and being unable to feed and support their families. We thought that Esperanza was being a good
person when she helped Marta hide from immigration when they came through the camp.

We thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and all agreed that it is a good book to share with our future
students.
