RFID BASED ATTENDANCE SYSTEM USING

Arduino UNO
Abstract: Most educational institutions’ administrators are concerned about student
irregular attendance. Truancies can affect student overall academic performance. The
conventional method of taking attendance by calling names or signing on paper is
very time consuming and insecure, hence inefficient. Radio Frequency Identification
(RFID) is an interesting solution in such cases. RFID based attendance system is one
of the solutions to address this problem.
Introduction:
Radio frequency is an automatic identification process used for
transmitting data between an RFID tag and RFID reader with help of radio-frequency
fields. The RFID tag is a device used to store data of any stuff, persons, books,
animals, etc. RFID tags are different types some tags can be placed near to RFID
reader and some can read from far away distances beyond the line of sight of the
reader.
The aim of the project is to maintain the record of the student’s attendance by
using RFID tags. Each student is issued with his/her authorised tag, which can be used
for swiping in front of the RFID reader to record their attendance. In this proposed
system, attendance system is implemented by using advanced wireless technology
“RFID”, only the authorised students are provided with the tags which consists of
inbuilt IC for storing and processing info.

Block Diagram: We can divide the complete attendance system into different
sections: reader section and display section.
Circuit Principle:
The circuit principle is RFID can be interfaced to microcontroller
the data can be transferred from Tags to reader and from there to MC. RFID tags are
of two types: 1) Passive Tags, 2) Active Tags.
Passive tags contain 13 digit number tag inbuilt in it, whereas
Active tag is read/tag i.e.one can read and write on tag. This project uses passive tag.
In real time, one can issue tags to students, with roll numbers as their tags. RFID
reader contains a copper winding in it. This winding act as an antenna. When the tag is
placed near the reader, due to the induced mutual inductance energy, data is
transferred to reader. Reader then transfer data to the microcontroller. Arduino UNO
checks for the data continuously, if any data is received, Arduino UNO compares the
data in the data base.

Working:
The working of the project is explained here, when this circuit is
powered ON, initially the Arduino UNO will display the message as Swipe the card
on the LCD display. When the RFID reader detects the ID card, it will send the unique
card no to the Arduino UNO via serial terminal.
With the help of suitable programming, we need to compare the
received card no. with the numbers that are already stored in the Arduino UNO or any
database.
Once, if any of these numbers are match with the received card no., then
the corresponding name stored in that no. is displayed on the LCD display and also the
attendance for the name stored in the corresponding number is marked.
By pressing the buttons, the actions like result, clear memory, ’yes’, ‘no’
can nbe performed and the details are displayed on the LCD repeatedly until the
Arduino has been reset.

Components Required:
 Arduino UNO
 4 Push buttons
 Buzzer
 RTC Module (DS1307)
 LIR 2302 battery
 16 x 2 LCD Display
 330Ω Resistor
 10KΩ POT
 EM-18 RFID Reader Module
 RFID Tags or Cards
 Connecting Wires
Applications of RFID Based Attendance System:

 There are different types of RFID systems in the market that consists of an
antenna, transceiver and a transponder. These systems operate at different
frequency ranges like low frequency (30-500 kHz), mid frequency (900-1500)
and high frequency (2.4-2.5GHz).
 RFID based attendance system can be used in educational institutions,
industries, anywhere.
 RFID is emerging technology and is used in applications where authentication
is needed.

Limitations of RFID Based Attendance System:

 RFID attendance system is secured, but there is a chance of misusing the cards.
 If the card was swiped for more than once, there is a chance of giving
attendance for next days also if code is not written properly.

Conclusion: As RFID technology evolves, more sophisticated applications will use

the capability of RFID to receive, store and forward data to a remote sink source. The
versatility of RFID can be used in implementing functional and automatic student
course attendance recording system that allows students to simply fill their attendance
just by swiping or moving their ID cards over RFID reader which are located at the
entrance of lecture halls with a considerable degree of success and acceptability of
usage in our faculty. Such an RFID based attendance system can shift the paradigm of
student‘s lecture attendance monitoring in classroom and provide a new, accurate, and
less cumbersome way of taking student attendance in school.
