Stadium News Release
MOBILE, Ala.--- The City Council rejected a proposal to fund $10 million for the
University of South Alabama stadium at last Tuesday’s meeting. The proposal failed in a four to
three vote; five votes were necessary for approval. The meeting followed a month long debate on
the use of city funds for a university owned stadium. “It’s critical for the city of Mobile to
address its own pressing issues and projects for all citizens,” said councilman C.J. Small.
Gina Gregory, Fred Richardson, and Joel Daves voted in favor of the proposal, while
John Williams, Bess Rich, C.J. Small and Levon Manzie voted against it. “USA’s stadium would
serve its own needs, but a community stadium is also needed,” said Rich.
The South Alabama football team will no longer play at the city-owned Ladd-Peebles
Stadium once the on-campus stadium is built. Dollar General Bowl executive director Jerry
Silverstein is considering moving the bowl game from Ladd to South Alabama.
The resolution would have allocated the funds over a 20-year period. “We anticipate that
we will continue to generate interest in the stadium among individuals and private
organizations,” said President Tony Waldrop and Athletics Director Joel Erdmann in a joint
statement.
The City Council meets every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Government Plaza Auditorium. If
you are interested in being added to the Council’s agenda, contact the City Clerk’s Office.
