Research Proposal

How does improper representation of working dogs affect the view of them by society and

individuals?

Dogs have the ability to do so much more than just sit there and look cute. With the

proper training they can do some amazing things. There are so many different types of working

dogs, but the type that really inspired me to focus on this topic are service dogs. I have a service

dog of my own, a mini pinscher and corgi mix breed named Chase. He does so many things to

help me with my disabilities from keeping me safe and healthy to keeping me calm.

So many people will try to pass off their pet as a service animal or will simply bring their

pets into places they shouldn't be. This makes me scared, as most of these animals have no

proper public training and will bark or in some cases attack trained working animals. Before

really doing any research I think that many of the laws pertaining to working dogs, mainly

service dogs, are ignored. I also think that the laws are just simply not known. I believe that this

topic is very important and needs to be addressed to ensure the safety of both working animals

and their animals. I also believe this topic is important because many people have a negative

view on working animals and think they are being forced to work when in actuality most enjoy

the work they do. As I said before I have a service dog so I know a lot about that type of

working animal, but I don't know very much about the many other types of working dogs.

I really hope to be able to learn about the different types of working dogs from police

dogs to service dogs to search and rescue dogs. I also hope to learn more about the laws around

working dogs.
