Supply chain of saree

Saree is an inevitable part of clothing of Indian women. It has been part of their wardrobe
from generations and has certain significant value in their life. As versatile it is functionally,
production of saree as a process has lots of variations depending upon the style of product.
sarees are produced in this country in variations depending upon the culture, geography and
income of the consumer. Even though the end product is different but sarees follows a fixed
series of steps, things are added and removed depending upon the end result needed to be
achieved.
The supply chain of sarees has following steps involved usually
 Cultivation and acquisition - the process being with the cultivation and acquisition of
the raw material. Sarees are made in range of fabric from silk to georgette, the first
step involves acquiring the raw material which make the final product.
 Weavers and dyeing: it is where the product starts taking its shape, the weavers weave
the threads of acquired raw material together. Colour can be added at both stages
before or after threads are woven together. Patterns are also developed as a part of
weaving structure.
 Finishing: after the woven product is ready, finishes are performed onto the product to
provide the final feel. Calendaring is usually performed to remove the creases from
final product.
 Packaging: after final product is ready, the next step involves making the product
ready for consumer. Sarees produced are packaged according to their types, usually
the variation is done on the basis of the prices.
 Intermediaries: these are the connection between weavers and the buyer. The product
is produced in mills or by local weavers, travel through these intermediaries to the
market.
 Retailers: product over here directly sold to the consumer, it is usually presented on
the mannequins. In order to make more sale, product augmentation is done by the
retailers.
