A DETAILED LESSON PLAN

IN MATHEMATICS 7
I. Objectives
At the end of a 60-minute session, the students should be able to:
A. identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions;
B. evaluates algebraic expression for given values of the variables. M7AL-IIc-4; and
C. show appreciation in working with group activity.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: EVALUATING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
Reference: E-Math by Orlando A. Oronce and Marilyn O. Mendoza

Instructional Materials: Visual aids, Graphic Organizer, PowerPoint presentation,

Laptop, projector, activity envelope, chalk/marker and board

III. Instructional Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Daily Routine

1. Prayer
Class let’s all stand up.
Before we start,____________ lead
the prayer. A student will lead the prayer.
Dear God…………………….Amen.

2. Greetings

Good Morning class. Good Morning ma’am.

3. Checking of Attendance

Is everybody present for today? Yes ma’am, everybody is present today.

B. Priming/Activating Prior knowledge

1. Drill

Class find the answer to the following multi

operation mathematical expression in column A
and find your answer in column B.

COLUMN A COLUMN B 1. F
1. 3(8)-(14+10) A. 5 2. C
2. (2+6)(2-3) B. 14 3. A
3. 2(3)+4-5 C. -8 4. E
4. (2+6)(2) D. 3 5. D
5. 2(3)/(3-1) E. 16 6. B
6. (6 × 4) ÷ 3 − 6 + 22 F. 0

Very Good!
2. Review

How do we solve multi operation Ma’am we solve multi operation mathematical

mathematical expression? expression by following the rules of PEMDAS.

Very Good!

And what does PEMDAS stand for? The students will state the answer.
Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division,
Addition, Subtraction.

That is correct! We solve multi operation

expression by following the operation order
of Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, and Subtraction.

C. Lesson Development

1. Motivation/Activity
Students will raise their hands.
Class, where do we usually hear the word Ma’am we hear the word substitution in basketball,
substitution? volleyball, etc.

Ma’am the player is replaced by another player.

And how do we substitute in basketball?

That’s right.

Now class, we will be having an activity

called “Sub me in”.

(The teacher will present a PowerPoint

presentation of the activity “Sub me in”).

Let A=1 H=8 O=15 V=22

B=2 I=9 P=16 W=23
C=3 J=10 Q=17 X=24
D=4 K=11 R=18 Y=25
E=5 L=12 S=19 Z=26
F=6 M=13 T=20
G=7 N=14 U=21

Find the equivalent value of the given words by

substituting the numerical value above to each letter
of the word and adding all the numerical digits.

For example

L O V E
12 + 15 +22 +5 = 54

H U M B L E
8+ 21+ 13+ 2+ 12+ 5= 61

Do you get it class? Yes ma’am.

Are you ready class? Yes ma’am, we are ready.

Who would like to try the first word? A student will be called to answer.
KNOWLEDGE K N O W L E D G E
11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5= 96
Now for the second word.

HARDWORK H A R D W O R K
8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98

How about the last word?

A T T I T U D E
ATTITUDE 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5= 100

Very good class, does everyone have the same answers? Yes ma’am.

2. Analysis

What did we do in our activity? Ma’am we find the numerical value of the given
words.

Correct. And how did we find the value of the Ma’am we substitute the corresponding value in
given words? each letter.

And then what’s next? Ma’am we perform the indicated operation, we add
all the value.
Very good!

Class, when a number is substituted or replace

for the variable in a given algebraic expression,
the expression takes a numerical value. And
finding the value is what we call “Evaluating the
Algebraic Expression”.

Let’s do this example.

Evaluate 6𝑥 2 + 3 when,
a. X = 0
b. X = -2
c. X = 1

For letter a, how do we evaluate? Ma’am we substitute the given value of x in the
What should we do first? equation

Correct. Can someone show us how to

substitute the value of x in our equation? A student will be called to substitute the value
Of x.
6(0)2 + 3 =

Very good !

Now what is the next step? We perform the indicated operations.

Since we got here a multi operation Ma’am we follow the rules of PEMDAS.
equation, what should we do?

Excellent! Can someone demonstrate

on how to apply the rules of PEMDAS
in our equation? 6(0)2 + 3 =
6(0) + 3 =
0+3=3
That is correct!
Now for letter b, x = -2. A student will be called to answer.
Who would like to try following the
same steps? 6𝑥 2 + 3 =
6(−2)2 + 3 =
6(4) + 3 =
24 + 3 = 27

And for the last example, x = 1 6𝑥 2 + 3 =

6(1)2 + 3 =
6(1) + 3 =
6 + 3 =9

3. Abstraction

Now class, in evaluating algebraic

expressions, what are the steps that we need 1. Substitute the given value to the
to follow? variable.
2. Perform the indicated operation by
Following the rules of PEMDAS.
Very good.

4. Application

Now that you already know how to evaluate

algebraic expressions, we will be having a
group activity. I will divide you into two
groups. Each group will choose their leaders.
The leader will be the one who can ask
me about the activity and he is also
responsible for dividing the tasks between the
members of the group. Each group will be
given an activity envelope where you will
find the materials for the activity and the
expressions that your group will be going to
evaluate.

Now, the group activity will be

scored according to this standard.
