The authors at NASA Kennedy Space Center have developed a controlled-release system that

combines the advantages of corrosion sensing and corrosion protection functions using

pHtriggered release microcapsules. 1,29,30 The core component of this technology is a pH

sensitive microcapsule. The microcapsule wall will break down and release its contents under basic

conditions, which correspond to the pH conditions at the cathodic site of corrosion (as shown the

figure below).

There is a great demand for functional anti-corrosion coatings as a result of the tremendous

degradation and losses to metallic structures due to corrosion. Conventionally used chromate-

based corrosion protectors are unfriendly due to their leachability on the coating surface and have

been banned in many applications. Also, the coating formulations used conventionally are passive

in nature, thus any defect in these protective coatings leads to direct contact of the corrosion species

with the metal surface.

Self-healing organic anti-corrosion coatings can be a very beneficial alternative for the long-term

protection of such structures. The term ‘self-healing’ is defined as self-recovery of the initial

properties of the material after destructive action of the external environment [1]. It should also be
noted that the hindrance to the corrosion phenomenon by the protective coating is the most

important criterion for calling the performance of the coating self-healing as this automatically

recovers the initial properties of the coating.

These self-healing organic coatings with micro/nano-carriers or containers of corrosion inhibitors

can be achieved in different ways:

Doping/adsorption of the corrosion inhibitors on the surface of inorganic metal oxide nanoparticles

(particles act as corrosion inhibitor carriers) embedded in the organic coatings.

The biggest challenge that Bhaskar sees for the adoption of additional smart coatings technologies

is the economics involved with their development and eventual mass adoption in various markets.

“At the onset, smart coatings technologies may be cost-prohibitive for several applications, which

may lead to slower adoption in the marketplace,” he says.

To date, one of the major hurdles to advancing current smart coating technologies for external and

internal automotive applications is durability, according to Peczonczyk. External automotive

coatings need to withstand a wide range of environmental (UV light, heat, humidity) and physical

conditions for extended periods of time. Easy-to-clean and other functional coatings for the vehicle

interior are also subject to extreme challenges (abrasion, heat, chemicals, humidity, etc.) for many
years. “These hurdles in the automotive industry are at times greater than in other industries due

to the long life spans and difficult environmental conditions vehicles are exposed to. In addition,

adding functionality to coatings often also adds cost. For most applications, improvements in

functionality must be weighed against added cost,” she states.

building construction industry

Most of the published data about smart coatings represent the lab-scale

testing results. The automation of the coating formation procedure for

scaling up for industrial applications is unclear and, in fact, will be the

real challenge for future industry.

In this review we represent a reasonable survey of the current efforts across the world in the

development of self-healing materials pertaining to coating applications. Self-healing composites

possess great potential for solving some of the most limiting problems of polymeric structural

materials such as microcracking, hidden damage and corrosion reduction. The ability to heal them

via self-healing polymer coating will enable structures with longer lifetimes and less maintenance.

Defect reduction is another interesting area where self-healing coating not only offers a cost

performance benefit but also repair is possible to those areas, which is almost inaccessible.

Although the potential benefits are quite high, the self-repairing system described here has some

practical limitations such as crack healing kinetics, stability of the healing functionality to
environmental conditions, material costs, and virgin property reduction. Different approaches for

designing self healing materials are appearing continuously in this domain of research, however,

till date microcapsulation is one of the simplest techni(iues that showns potential for developing

self healing coatings by incorporating microcapsules containing healing agents into commercially

available paints. Same technique but corrosion detecting chemicals, corrosion inhibitors etc. as

core materials can further help to create different other value added functional coatings.

Commercialization of these technologies is still in its infancy. Further nistîarch is needed for

improvemimt of thiï existing self healing systems, healing consistency with selfassembling agents

and production of a new generation of structural materials. 2K PUK of Bayer AG, 'Hecavef of

HMG Paints of Manchester (U.K) are only few examples present globally till now is the self-

healed topcoat system. The review of the data and results available in the public domain suggfists

that the future of this up-coming technology is quite strong and holds great promise across the

broad spectrum of coating applications. However, more drives from the industries are predictable

to make selfhealing coatings and paints commercially to save money, time and environment, self-

diagnosis may be thebnext step, with self-adaptation as the ultimate vision.Use the "Insert
