HOW MALARIA IS TRANSMITTED
Malaria is carried from person to person by a certain kind of mosquito that usually bites
at night. A person with malaria may have one or more of the following common
symptoms:
Fever (sweating, feeling cold and shivering)
Headache
Pain in the joints
Loss of appetite
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Convulsions (fits)
The insecticide on the net kills or keeps away mosquitoes. An insecticide-treated net also
kills or keeps away other insects, such as head lice, bedbugs and fleas.
HOW DO TREATED MOSQUITO NETS WORK
Malaria is spread by a particular variety of mosquito known as the Anopheles mosquito
which prefers to feed at night, while children are sleeping. A mosquito looking for blood
will be attracted towards a person but will then come into contact with the insecticide on
the treated net. Mosquitoes are killed or repelled by their contact with the insecticide. The
repellent effect of the insecticide means that other people sleeping in the same room -
though not using the net - will also benefit. It is similar to spraying the room every night.
We are in partnership with DuraNet® and PemaNet®. Their LLINs Mosquito Net are
made with slighter thicker polyethylene. DuraNet® and PemaNet® LLINs will maintain
their effectiveness for a lifetime of up to 5 years; which are proving to be almost twice as
long as the lifespan of all polyester (PES) nets on the market. DuraNet® and PemaNet®
LLINs, the insecticide is incorporated into the fibre and is control released over time.
Just the right amount of insecticide migrates to the surface over their entire lifespa
EFFECTIVENESS
When a large number of nets are distributed in one residential area or town, their
chemical additives help reduce the number of mosquitoes in the environment. With fewer
mosquitoes, the chances of malaria infection for recipients and non-recipients are
significantly reduced. (In other words, the importance of the physical barrier effect of
ITNs decreases relative to the positive externality effect of the nets in creating a
mosquito-free environment when ITNs are highly concentrated in one residential cluster
or community.)
ITNs protect children sleeping under them and simultaneously kill mosquitoes that
contact the nets. Some protection is provided to others by this method, including people
sleeping in the same room but not under the net. However, mathematical modeling has
suggested that disease transmission may be exacerbated after bed nets have lost their
insecticidal properties under certain circumstances. Although ITN users are still protected
by the physical barrier of the netting, non-users could experience an increased bite rate as
mosquitoes are deflected away from the non-lethal bed net users.
