The British Embassy in Israel is looking for a

Political Assistant
(an initial contract of 12 months)

An exciting and challenging job for a motivated self-starter working to shape the UK’s
understanding of Israeli politics, with ample opportunity for personal development. An ideal
springboard for a subsequent career in related fields.

The successful applicant will assist the Second Secretary Political (Internal) by analysing and
reporting on developments within Israel’s internal politics and on the Middle East Peace Process.
He or she will have a good knowledge of the various components in Israeli society, including the
Russian and religious sectors. S/he will also have a relevant first degree, an excellent working
knowledge of the Israeli political system, and excellent written and spoken communication skills.
S/he will also be a self-starter, able to work unsupervised, respond well to tasking, and to work to
deadlines. Previous experience of government, parliamentary or NGO work an advantage. S/he
will be fluent in Hebrew and in English, and able to work well under pressure.

The job will be graded at LE III level in the Embassy’s structure and the salary will be in the range
NIS 9,118-11,347 (+ benefits), depending on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities will include:

• monitoring developments within Israel’s internal politics and Middle East Peace Process,
and keeping the Second Secretary Political (Internal) and other Embassy colleagues fully
briefed on any key developments;

• write a daily round-up of the Israeli media;

• preparing and circulating regular analysis of Israel’s internal politics;

• organising meetings for the Second Secretary Political (Internal) with appropriate
contacts, and on occasion attending and recording these meetings;

• developing working relationships with colleagues at the British Consulate-General in


Jerusalem and where appropriate producing joint reporting;

• initiating, cultivating and maintaining contacts within the range of sectors of Israeli
society, reporting on key trends in those sectors’ politics and opinion;

• swift and accurate translation from Hebrew to English and English to Hebrew at the
request of other section members;

• supporting the Visits Officer as required; and

• additional tasks as required.

The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate:

 Creativity, flexibility and good communications skills;


 Ability to work well under pressure; and
 Fluency in English and Hebrew.

will take place during the week commencing 15 November and the successful candidate must be
available to take up the position in mid-December or earlier. Unsuccessful applicants will not be

The contract will be for 12 months in the first instance.
