SNC2DI/W 2015 Interview Questions Name:

1. There is evidence that our climate is changing and that it is at least partly anthropogenic. The change in the
carbon budget has contributed to an enhanced greenhouse effect.
a) Identify one chemical process (reaction) that affects the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
Provide a balanced chemical equation to show this. [2]
b) Explain how this reaction contributes to the enhanced greenhouse effect. [2]
c) We live in a unique area. Outline four societal or environmental impacts global warming would have
on the Southern Ontario region. [2]
d) Describe and explain 4 actions (political or personal choices) that could be taken to combat global
warming. [2]

2. The microscope helped to improve our quality of life. Below is a diagram that explains how a
brightfield/darkfield optical microscope focuses light to produce an image.
a) Use this diagram to state the characteristics of the final image (LOST) and how the image is formed. [4]

b) The microscope exposed scientists to a whole new world. Biologist are now able to use more sophisticated
microscopes to see parts and have learned much about how organelles function. The mitochondrion and
chloroplasts are two organelles that perform specific chemical reactions in the cell. State the chemical
process each organelle performs and provide the balanced chemical reaction for it. [2]
c) How is the chemical process of the chloroplast affected by the chemical process of the mitochondrion and
vice versa? [1]
d) The cell is one specialized unit that, when combined, forms a tissue. These tissues coordinate their actions
and function as organs and eventually organ systems. For one of the organelles listed in 2c), state a cell
type (plant or animal) to which it belongs and describe how that cell would integrate into a system. [1]
