Summary
Prior Knowledge Students begin the unit by creating a knowledge ladder of the word Algebra.
Algebra Knowledge Ladder Each letter in the word should be used to describe the student’s own perception
A of what Algebra means to them. The student’s response need not begin with the
L first letter (example vAriables). The purpose of the ladder is to get an idea of
G the student’s already held beliefs about and understanding of Algebra. Student
E ladders will be assessed informally during student completion.

Video If completion of the knowledge ladders proves difficult for some students,
Algebra Basics: What Is Algebra? consider playing the video of Algebra Basics: What is Algebra? so as to help
these students build their existing knowledge.
Formative Summary
Quiz* Students will be assessed with a short online quiz on the Order of Operations.
Order of Operations Quiz The assessment is written as a Google Form and a student email address is
required to submit the quiz for teacher grading.
Webercise Students will complete an online webercise activity to facilitate the translation
Algebra: Express Yourself of expressions into algebra and the order of operations in real-life. The
completed activity will be collected and formally assessed for a letter grade.
Graphic Organizer Students will complete an online graphic organizer to demonstrate their
Polya's 4-Step Problem Solving knowledge and understanding of the 4-steps involved in problem-solving.
Students will be scored according to Polya’s 4-Step Graphic Organizer Rubric.
Summative Summary
Presentation* Students will work in pairs to produce a group presentation of real-world word
problems. The assessment will be scored by the following Presentation Rubric.
Exam Students will complete a cumulative unit exam. The exam will assess student
skill level and knowledge. Exam problems will be scored on a 4-point scale.
