Grade level 1 Lesson title Subtraction facts to 10

Step 1—Desired Results

Standards, benchmarks, other objectives as needed (e.g., IEP)—What should students know,
understand, and be able to do as a result of the lesson?

How can I use number bonds to find what is missing?

 Understand that subtraction means taking away
 Subtraction means’ minus ‘or ‘less ‘
 Count on and count back to subtract
 Use number bonds to subtract
 Use addition facts to find the missing part
 Students will use previous understanding of part and whole to arrive at whole – part
1 = part 2 and vice versa
 Use subtraction in an equation example 5 – 2 = 3

Essential Vocabulary – take away , subtract , minus , subtraction sentence , less than
Step 2—Assessment Evidence
Performance task—What will students do to show what they have learned?
Performance criteria—How good are good enough to meet standards?
 Students will use addition facts to write subtraction equation
 Use counters to act out subtraction word problems
 Model subtraction using Number bonds and Ten frames
Step 3—Learning Plan
Learning activities (step by step from start to finish, detailed enough for another teacher to follow)

Step 1 - Teacher shows 5 counters to children, I had 5 cookies I shared 2 cookies with my friend. Teacher
takes 2 counters and keeps it away. How many are left, left means remaining with me?
Step 2 – Subtraction, taking away means the same

5 – 2 = 3 (this is a subtraction sentence)

Hands on Activity
Materials needed Ten’s frame
Counters
9 – 3 =?
Place 9 counters on the ten’s frame. Take away from 3 (take away means less)
9-3 = 6
Similarly Solve 7 -2 and 8 -5
- Using number lines to count on or count backwards

Students use number line to count forward or backward 7 – 2 = 5 from 7 count 2 backwards or from 2 count till
7 to find the answer

- Using Number bonds to subtract

Rita had 5 candies she gave 2 to her sister. How much is left with Rita?
Ask - What is the total number of candies? 5 will that be the part or whole? 5 is the whole and one part is 2 what
will be the other part?
2
Write the number bond on the board 5
?

Step 4—Reflection
What happened during my lesson? What did my students learn? How do I know?
What did I learn? How will I improve my lesson next time?
