1.0 DESCRIPTION

As a part of pre-commissioning/commissioning activities, some systems require chemical

cleaning. These guidelines have been made to identify the systems requiring chemical
cleaning. The detailed procedure for chemical cleaning has been developed separately by
SMMS and should be referred to.

2.0 GUIDELINES

1. Process engineers should make in consultation with SMMS and POSD a separate list
of lines/equipment which require chemical cleaning and this should be sent to
project/POSD/ client for approval.

2. For EIL technology, technology manual if available should be referred.

3. For Licensed technology, chemical cleaning requirement should be decided with

licensor during design conference/Basic engineering package review.

4. Chemical cleaning is required for the following systems:

a) Steam System

• Alkali boil out is required for all boilers generating steam.

• Transfer line exchangers, steam drum and associated piping connected with
VHP steam generation system in cracker.

• VHP system (60 Kg/cm2 and above pressure) header should be chemically
cleaned. All other steam lines at lower pressure shall be cleaned by steam
blowing.

• Target plate steam blowing system is normally used for cleaning of steam
lines connected to steam turbines/steam ejectors. However, chemical cleaning
of VHP and HP steam lines connected to steam turbines shall be preferred to
reduce total start up time.

b) Cooling Water

All cooling water exchangers shall be chemically cleaned and passivated to

minimise fouling.

c) Compressor Suction Line

• All compressor suction lines in hydrocarbon service (except SS lines) should

be chemically cleaned for reciprocating compressors. However, for
centrifugal compressors, manual cleaning should be done for lines above 36”
size. For suction line up to 36” size, chemical cleaning should be done.

• Suction lines only downstream of Knock-out drum needs to be chemically

cleaned. If there is no Knock-out drum, entire suction line to be chemically
cleaned.

• Lube oil circuit of compressors should be chemically cleaned.

d) Stainless Steel Lines

• SS lines/equipment where naphthenic acid attack is expected shall be

passivated by proper chemical treatment.

e) Foaming Services

• Process systems where foaming is expected shall be chemically treated to

remove external material like grease, oil etc. For example, Sodium carbonate
(1-2 wt% solution) circulation at 100°C during start up followed by water
wash is recommended for Amine Treatment Units.

f) Special Equipment

• Feed lines for welded plate type exchangers need to be chemically cleaned.

• Process engineer should check the requirement for other special equipment
for deciding chemical cleaning.
