“Alright one biiig smile for me,” the photographer directed as he disappeared
behind the clunky camera equipment, “1, 2, 3, smile!”
I was hot under the beaming lights and I could feel all the efforts of 2 hours of
getting ready this morning deteriorating right in front of the lense. I smiled, regardless
of my internal languish, and made sure my eyes were open as the flash came.
Click click.
My smile dropped instantaneously as he straightened to check the monitor with
my face on it. He sighed and gathered his hands in his chest as he smiled at me, “You
look amazing!”
I circled around the equipment and faced the monitor beside the photographer.
He flipped through a few shots to show me and I tried my best to smile as he went on
about how he liked this one more than the previous because the angling was better,
even though I saw virtually no difference. I thanked him quickly and shuffled along so
that the next person could come in and have their pictures taken. As I left the
gymnasium, I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry.
I looked like a fish.
