1 Turning Movement Count Survey (TMC)

Turning volume count surveys were conducted at the major intersections along the
project corridor. The classified turning volume count was carried out for a period of
24 hours on a normal working day. Enumerators, suitably trained were deployed in
adequate numbers at all arms of the intersection to record the number of vehicles
by category covering all directions of traffic flow. The counts were recorded at
fifteen minute intervals to get at the peak hour volumes. The format for this survey
is given in Appendix 1.

The various vehicle types having different sizes and characteristics were converted
into equivalent passenger car units (PCU). The Passenger Car Unit recommended
by Indian Road Congress in “Guidelines for Capacity of Roads in Rural Areas”
(IRC-64-1990) have been used for PCU conversion, and are presented in Table
2.3.

1.1.2 Turning Movement Count Survey Analysis

Junction volume count survey is conducted at proposed intersections on the
project corridor. The peak hour and daily flows at the junctions are presented
below.

1.1.3 Pedestrian Count Survey
Pedestrian count survey was carried out at mid block locations and at the junctions
where substantial pedestrian crossing has been observed. It was carried out during
8.00AM to 8.00PM. This survey was done during the month of April 2013 and the
format used for this count is enclosed in the appendix-1.

The aim of the study is to estimate the quantum of pedestrian movements across
the road at important locations with predominant pedestrian activity. This in turn
would help in assessing the need for various facilities such as pedestrian subway,
foot over bridge, Zebra crossings etc on priority basis for safe pedestrian
movement.

Pedestrians crossing count at 2 mid block locations and at five intersections was
recorded for a period of twelve hours and the count has been used to verify the
warrant for grade separation / separate signal phasing.

Table 2.2: Peak Pedestrian Volume Crossing the Road

Pedestrian volume Crossing the Road
S. No Location Peak Hour (Number/hour) Remarks
Direction 1 Direction 2 Total
1 Km 8+329 16:00 – 17:00 172 153 325 Mid Block
2 Km 49+849 18:00 – 19:00 40 45 85 Mid Block

As per the guidelines given in IRC, 103-1988, “Guidelines for pedestrian Facilities”
condition to warrant controlled measures at mid block locations on undivided
carriageway is PV2 108, where P - peak hour pedestrian volume and V – Vehicles
during peak. It is found that these locations will not warrant any controlled crossing
/ grade separation facility for pedestrian crossing. Hence only at-grade facilities
(Zebra crossing/Signs) are proposed at these midblock locations.
