Subject Name: Design of Tall Structures
Time: 02:30 PM To 05:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks
4. Use of IS 875, IS 800, IS 456, IS 1893, IS13920, SP 16, IS 3370 are permitted
5. Use M20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel if not given any where
6. Draw neat sketch if required
7. Consider unit weight of concrete 25 kN/m3 and Masonry 20 kN/m3if required.

Q.1 (a) Design a chimney having a height of 65 m using following data. Also check 14
the stresses at base in the reinforcements
a) External diameter at top = 4.4 m
b) External diameter at base = 5.4 m
c) Shell thickness at top = 200 mm
d) Shell thickness at base = 400 mm
e) Wind Intensity = 1.85 kN/m2 throughout
f) Thickness of fire brick lining = 100 mm
g) Air gap=100 mm
h) Temperature difference = 75 °C
i) Coefficient of thermal expansion = 10 x 10-6 / °C
j) Es= 2 x 105N/mm2
k) Density of brick lining = 20 kN/m3
Use M30 grade of concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.

Q.2 (a) Explain in brief core and out-trigger system used in high-rise building 07
mentioning its advantages.
(b) A reinforced concrete chimney 85 m high above ground has an outside 07
diameter of 5.4 m. The thickness of the shell is 20 cm throughout. Vertical
steel is taken as 1.2 % of the cross sectional area throughout. The total wind
load above the base may be taken as 300 kN. Find the stresses developed
due to wind and dead load at the base of chimney. Use M25 concrete and
Fe500 steel.

(b) Enlist the factors governing the configuration of transmission line tower. 07
Also sketch the various types of bracing system used for transmission line
tower.

Q.3 A microwave tower of height 60 m is to be built at out-skirt of Surat 14


(Gujarat) on a level ground. It has to carry two circular disc of 3.0 m
diameter on top. Other data is as follows.
a) Width of top of tower = 4 m
b) Weight of platform on top = 1.0 kN/m2
c) Weight of antenna and fixture = 11 kN
d) Weight of railing on top = 0.45 kN/m
e) Weight of ladder and cage = 0.75 kN/m
f) Self-weight of truss = 5 kN/m

g) Live load = 1.0 kN/m2
h) Weight of miscellaneous items = 3.5 kN.
Configure the tower and calculate the design loads in each panel and design
the any one panel of tower along with structural details.

Q.3 (a) Calculate maximum sag, S and tension in transmission cable, T2 for the 07
variation of temperature range = -5° (t2) to 32°C (t1). Use following data:
a) Every day temperature (t1) : 32° C
b) Weight span = wind span = 300 m
c) Overall diameter of conductor = 30 mm
d) Weight of the conductor = 14 N/m
e) Shape factor for conductor = 0.67
f) Wind Pressure = 1 kN/m2
g) Coefficient of linear Expansion = 20 × 10 – 6 per °C
h) Young’s Modulus of elasticity = 0.8 × 105 N/mm2
i) Permissible axial tension (T1) = 35 kN
j) Effective Cross-sectional area of conductor = 500 mm2.
(b) (i)Enlist the various types of loads acting on the transmission line towers. 05
Under what circumstances torsional load occur on them?
(ii) Find the ruling span for a transmission line with spans of 200 m, 250 m, 02
325 m, 350 m.

Q.4 Evaluate the membrane forces at the base section of hyperbolic cooling 14
tower and design the bottom section using following data.
Height of hyperbolic cooling tower = 78 m
Top diameter = 45 m
Throat diameter = 40 m
Density of concrete = 25 kN/m3
distance of throat section from top = 18 m
Use M30 grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel

(2)Describe the various performance levels of structural components 04
considered in pushover analysis.
(b) What do you mean by tall buildings? Discuss the factor responsible for 07
slimming down the weight of structural frames of tall buildings.

(b) Explain the brief the shear wall frame interaction with neat sketch 07

Q.5 (a) Enlist various floor systems and lateral loads resisting structural system used 07
in reinforced concrete high-rise structures along with its suitability for
different height.
(b) Discuss various tube structural systems used in tall buildings along with 07
their recent application. Also describe in brief about shear lag effects in tube
structures.
