Lesson for Sexual and Asexual Reproduction:

Stations for Sexual and Asexual Reproduction 10 mins per station - 40 mins total (eliminate/add
stations to adapt length and can double the stations for larger classes to create smaller group sizes):

Station 1: Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction - Have students interact with the website below where
they click on images of organisms and guess they type of reproduction they undergo.
https://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/basics/reproduction/

Station 2: All About Asexual Reproduction - Have images (not identified) on the table for the
students. They must choose which image is depicting which type of asexual reproduction and then
draw a sketch of it on their paper.

Examples below:

Use the images on the table to illustrate each of the following types of reproduction:

- Fission
- Budding
- Regeneration
- Cloning

Station 3: Helpful or Hurtful Matching Game

Cut out the following strips of paper. Have students match the following advantages and
disadvantages with either sexual or asexual reproduction. Then have them fill out a venn diagram
comparing sexual and asexual reproduction.

Asexual reproduction Sexual Reproduction

Type of reproduction taking place with one Two parents are needed
parent, no mate required

When an organism splits into two organisms Offspring are genetically different from parents
and each other - genetic variation

Large number of offspring in little time Joining of gametes normally a sperm and an egg
- need to search for a mate

Easier to spread mutations Can be time consuming & requires more energy

The exact copy of the organism - no genetic Can only happen at certain times
diversity

Selective breeding

Station 4: Model it - With this ball of clay can you model what asexual and sexual reproduction and
might look like?

Have them draw both of their models.

Why did you choose to display asexual reproduction in that way?

Why did you choose to display sexual reproduction in that way?
